Volvo recommend this stuff for their D5 engines now, but any good quality synthetic that meets their spec is OK.......http://www.mapodo.de/product_info.php/products_id/444

Don't take too much notice of this thread, were just thinking out loud and trying to see if we can get better results than Volvo can with all their engine testing. ;-)

My D5 is 163 hp. What is there spec? ACEA A4/B4? I think if you have new car you can use 0w-30 because it is very thin but in older cars 5w-30 will do ok.

0w-30 is OK as an alternative to 5w-30. Better in fact. It's the top no. that matters. The lower bottom no just extends the low weather use startup range.

I know you haver the 163bhp engine but what car is it in? I don't want to tell you what's in my book if you have the engine in a different car. Different car different handbook.

The spec in my book is ACEA A4/B4. However see the following.....

ACEA A5/B5 is just an uprated version of the other one and includes the B4/B4 spec with the addition of an mgp increase. 0.07 mpg I believe. Most 0w-30w and 5w-30w synthetics should meet this anyway. The companies are just relabeling them to show they meet the new spec.

The specs for.....A5 relates to petrol engines B5 relates to diesel engines by the way.

You can use either B4 or B5 and still be using the right oil as far as the handbook goes.

Default Lubricants Labelling

I'm sure that if you look at the back labels on the Major's lube oil packs you'll find the legally-required info re H&S, (The Esso and Mobil labels are multi-language/multi-page labels and you might need to lift the top page - but it will reseal).

Does anyone know if the Amsoil packs have a fully-informative back label that meets EU requirements ? If they a) don't have the required info or b) only have the standard USA label they are almost certainly not legal for sale within the EU. You can sometimes see ex-USA motor oil in Costco, with USA labels only. They're not legal either but Costco are either not aware or are taking a flyer.

Info re Amsoil greatly appreciated.

I'd check the handbook for you but the club changes the password acess every 8 weeks and I've always "put the club magazine somewhere safe" by the time I want to use it so I can never get into the club site. (The most annoying aspect of the club for me) I can always find all the old issues of course. Never the current one. If the mag turns up I'll check for you if someone else hasn't done it by then.

Amsoil Series 2000 0W-30W 5 liter containers don't have a back label. This is all the info it has.

I looked at the legaly required info on the back of a Moil 1 container and it's rubbish. Just tells you to phone a no for H&S info!! Why bother to go to all the waste of putting an extra concealed lable on for that? They could have just printed it on the front.

Well, that's certainly an opinion. From memory the back labels are to cover a number of countries with the same pack. If all that's legally required is a 'phone number then I guess that's all you're gonna get, (but I thought there was more than that - just shows what thought did).

Must pop into Halfords and have a looksee.

Thanks for the Amsoil pic. Not even a 'phone number or mention of A5/B5 which seems odd as I thought the 2000 was supposed to be.

I took the photo from the Opie web site and I think it must be an old lable because the container I bought in December had A5/B5 on it. Sorry I hadn't noticed.

It's easy enough to get the Amsoil phone no. as it has their address on the label if you don't happen to be near a computer when you want it.

I don't understand the logic of putting a contact phone no under a sticky label that has to be peeled back to reveal it. I've been buying Mobil 1 for my wifes car for 7 years and I'd never noticed that it had a conceled panel on the back until you mentioned it and I took a very close look at the back lablel. I just don't get this secrecy thing the oil companies seem revel in. Just what are they trying to hide from us?

Amsoil definately has A5/B5 on the new containers, and does anyone really care if it doesn't have EU legal H&S mumbo jumbo on the back? I certainly don 't.
