Some questions...again...
Hello...
I have a 2003 xc70 d5 awd. 200k i am on the process of replacing the gearbox oil part 2. i had the firsts changes like 1500 miles ago the oil was black when i got her i have replaced most of it, the oil didn't came out transparent red after the first 3 oil sumps but it was red. Now yesterday i had two flares(in auto i think or from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3) and the oil on the stick is black??? any ideas 1500 miles and its black? its because there is still lots of dirty still or more serious? Flares are caused by torque converter problems or body valve? Does this models need attention on B4 servo? A few days ago i sound under the car, i cant precise from where started it sounds like you are bagging on the exhaust, its the only similar sound. You can hear it on road with some vibration. Im sorry but its the only way i can explain. Many Thanks Last edited by Anubisxc70; Nov 23rd, 2017 at 13:05. |

my take
Your transmission has had a lot of time to get dirty. I'm guessing that you are simply getting more dirt out of it.
Flares are caused by functioning of the valve body. They wear and operate inefficiently. They can get dirty and hang up. The transmission's filter can clog and starve the entire system for fluid at the right pressure causing flares. Getting the fluid as clean as you can is "the first step" even if it takes more attempts. I think the bad (failure prone) B4 servo covers MAY HAVE spanned into 2003. I've read where there is a sheet metal cross brace on XC models which can hit (scrape) the driveshaft. Check for marks on the shaft itself. Other than that I have no ideas. I never owned an AWD; just 3 FWD. |

Did you reset the adaptations on the box?
I've read even some 2004 had the bad servo cover. But the cover only/mostly acts on the 2-3 upshifting. Worth looking at it, but it's a tough/very frustrating job the first time. Watch carefully throughout the videos for the places to check. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BUJ2aEsecg the comments link two other useful videos

2002 V70@258000 miles here.
Done maybe 5 gearbox oil (half)changes by now, it stiil coming out dark. Maybe not as black as in the beginning, but still brown, not red. Shifting did improve, though. So, don't worry just yet. Another trick, maybe meaningless, maybe not: With help of photo of valves I've found a place, on steel lid of valve body, to attach a powerful magnet. With help of photo as I wanted it as far from electromagnets as possible. I do hope it retains at least some of metallic debris from oil. The wee tiny magnet in sump plug just isn't enough.. |

Thank you for your reply's.
This weekend i will do some more sump changes. I also think that she accumulated in 13 years a lot of dirt. So i will continue to change the oil. I also have a bottle of Hydra trans tune. What you guys say? put a pint in run 30 miles and then do 2 or 3 sump changes? Many thanks |

As above really. I did 3 sump changes a few hundred miles apart and then carried on every second engine oil change. 50,000 miles later, the oil is so clean, it's a problem to see it on the dipstick and wiping it on clean white paper shows it to be a beautiful clean red colour. When you drain it out into a glass jar however, it's still dirty to the point you can't really see through it! I suspect it's still dissolving all the crud stuck in the torque converter.

JWS 3309 is the ATF oil used by Volvo. I got 10lt from Mannol jws 3309 for 30£, from ebay. But if it is the first time you do it....get 20 lt. in my case my oil is still dirty. It should came out red. Get some bottles. Dont forget what comes out goes in. Everytime you empty the sump it will be around 3 lts. There is a lot of oil on that torque converter. In Total i guess is around 7 to 12 lts i dont know the exact amount, manual say 7 lts others say 12.
Best of luck. Last edited by Anubisxc70; Nov 23rd, 2017 at 17:24. |

There is no need to drain the sump. Carefuly undo the return line at the radiator and use a tube, you don't have to crawl under the car. There is a video on youtube showing this.

If your oil is red or close to red you can do a fluid flush, because your gearbox is in good condition in terms of cleaning. But if it is brown or darker better do a change, because synthetic oil is a very good cleaner. if you replace all fluid in one go all that dirt will came loose and it might ruin your valve body by clogging all the way or even the solenoids . A change takes longer but its more safe (my opinion and in my case).
Google it Flush vs Change oil on gearboxes...try this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o690DovjDAc Fluid change https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxvFBDpSkmQ Fluid flush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WfY8MQc1B8 There are many different opinions. I prefer safe Last edited by Anubisxc70; Nov 23rd, 2017 at 18:16. |
