Default replacing drivers side mirror

hello, i have abit of a problem, just the other day the drivers side mirror fell off just the mirror it self, and i was left with a grey bit where the mirror was, managed to get a replacement from halfords as i wasnt prepared to pay £45 from volvo, i thought that the grey bit was to come off so i could put this new mirror on , to find out when getting half way across taking the grey bit off to see a heater element which i totally forgot about, so i stuck it back down, the only bit that hasnt stuck down is one corner tried to glue it down but it was starting to rain so just left it.

should i just leave the grey bit on if so whats best to stick it down with so it will stay

also can you take that mirror bit off the car if so how do you do it, i had a look but thought i would just leave it incase i broke it

Are you saying the mirror glass actually came away from the heater element and mirror backing?

You can remove the plastic mirror backing from the motor mechanism and, assuming the mirror is in good condition, you can try to glue it back together with some resin glue. Or you could get one from a car being dismantled.

as just wanting to get it repaired as quickly as possible, also some of the grey bit that i restuck back down, would a hair dryer work to make it more sticky again, basicly heat it up then let it cool down
