Exclamation Steering lock service required

Hi everyone. I'm a bit worried. Got an alert which flashed on my dashboard stating Steering Lock Service Required...or something similar..only got it for a second. I pulled key out and car started normally. I have been driving it for a couple of days now with no further issues. Just wondering what the problem could be and is this something I should worry about? I have an OBDC code reader...plugged it into the car..no fault codes or pending codes. Any comments welcome. Thank you. Tman.

There should be a fault code posted to go with this message , It is probably the first sign of a faulty steering lock motor . I would get it changed if you see the message again or you could be left with an immobilised car at some point which will need towing back to a volvo garage . .

Exclamation Turn Steering Try Start Again!

Clan, I had the same message some time ago on my V70 2.0D 2009. I had been driving my car for most of today stopping starting on a number of occasions no issues.

The warning light has now come on saying (Turn Steering Try Start Again!) I have tried suggestions from other forums to solve this issue without success. You suggested to replace the steering lock motor? Is this the main problem. When I put the key fob in I hear lots clicks from the passenger and drives side. All electrics still function fine. Battery and new alternator have recently been fitted.

Can the new steering lock be fitted from home and is this a big job? Any idea how much the part will cost and part number if you have any idea.

Many thanks

The steering lock needs software at the dealer to activate it , you could change it but will have to take the steering column out and drill out a couple of security screws . . then get it to the dealer with a locked column .

Default S40 Steering Lock Service Required

OK, been reading others with same problem, but to replace it as one stated and it was not the problem is an expensive lesson I would like to avoid given tow to dealer is over 100 miles. Car isn't worth the tow and new steering lock, so can the lock just be removed and bypassed? Any illustrations or videos on removal or replacement. There is mention of motor, so can just the motor be replaced? To be clear, I could care less about locking steering, no one would steal this money pit Volvo.

Thanks,

Old post but topic still current for all. Is there anyone who rebuilds these units. Read somewhere that the relay fails
