Volvo 480 turbo starting problem
I took my 480 to a garage to have the clutch changed. It came out with starting problems. I would get in and turn the ignition key and it would just click. it won't turn over. Then after turning the key a few more times it starts! Today it just clicked for over an 1hr of trying. Then I left it for 10mins came back and it started!?! Now it just won't start, just clicks. Im cheesed off as its been off the road and had new brakes, pads discs to pass MOT and now its not starting. I spose it could be the battery(haven;t checked yet). The annoying thing is before it went into the garage for the clutch it started fine EVERY time for the last 2 years!
Any ideas? Any tips on removing a starter motor from a 480 turbo if it is the starter motor. Cheers, Si |

If your battery is okay, then I would suspect the starter. A common failure on these with age! But also check the earths, as they may have mucked one up whilst doing the clutch.
Getting to it on my 480 turbo I found an absolute pain. In the end I gave up & took it to a garage. It's at the rear of the block, tucked cunningly behind the exhaust down pipe & a heat reflector plate if I recall correctly. When it is failing to start, pop it on to gear & rock the car to & fro so it turn the engine a 'smidge'. Then try to start it. If it frees up the starter, then that's your problem. You should be able to get one from a scrappy, but make sure it is the one for Turbo's, N/A engines have a less powerful one which would quickly 'burn out' if fitted to a turbo model. Good Luck.

Cheers for the reply Paul!
I spent all day with my dad and brother looking at it! You are correct with where the starter motor is and there are 2 heat plates which are a pain to get off! Then the exhaust....In fact it was a mission to get out but we did it! We took the starter motor apart and found some broken plastic pieces inside it which may have been a problem?! Who knows exactly but we cleaned it up put it back and it works as it did before it went into the garage! So Im very pleased now! Cheers for the post, Si |
