EGR Valve - Cleaning - D5
Is it worth stripping and cleaning the EGR Valve? - 2010 D5 with 100k on the clock.
There seems to be lots of posts on here with information for the 163HP engine, but I can't seem to find a comprehensive one for the 185HP lump. Sitting on the fence as too preventative cleaning may stop future issues OR if it ain't broke then don't fix it. Car is newish to me and I will be putting a lot more regular motorway miles on it as compared to previous owners. Comments / views please....and any definitive guides to doing it much appreciated. Cheers.

Its worth doing, esp with that mileage on.
Remove the pipe before the EGR on the left of it, and the ETM on the right and you will see carbon build up. Gets lots of rags, lots of carb cleaner and screw drivers. Its a messy messy job. Don't get clearer in the ETM, I'm told it affects the delicate cogs inside. I make it a regular once yearly job now. |

Did you take the EGM off or just cover it well?
Thanks. Quote:

REMOVED THE ETM...
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=94139 its similar to this, EXCEPT, you'll remove the ETM (and the plug in wires) on the right of the 2inch silver EGR valve shown, it has 4 bolts that are hand tight only, and a metal spacer washer (no need to replace unless its bent) Yours will more than likely look as blocked as this one... They do get nasty. Last edited by colinbos; Jan 8th, 2019 at 20:41. |

Yuck.....that's why I'm thinking it's worth doing.
Any tips or tricks ? Obviously battery disconnected before removing ETM I would presume? Are there any gaskets / seals needed elsewhere? Quote:

No gaskets or seals needed UNLESS the metal gasket between the ETM and EGR gets bent (no reason why it should get bent accept accidentally)
I haven't disconnected the battery. So long as the engine is off and has been for over 10mins I would suggest the engine is closed down. No key in ignition I would suggest is the minimum precaution. Easy ? Very easy if you can hold a wrench or screwdriver and remove some pipes.... just time consuming or dirty work. The results are worth it. The pipe isn't supposed to be that restricted and will help the car breath. |

@Colinbos - thanks for the explanations - by any chance would you have any pics? I took the engine cover off and there seems to be lots of pipes and things in the way.
Don't want to start undoing the wrong things
