V60 '07 stuck in geartronic

My wife came home yesterday with the shifter of our 2007 S60 stuck in geartronic mode. We could not shift to anything else or remove the key. After sone disassembly I discovered a wire.spring preventing the shifter from being moved and using a screwdriver I was able to get it back in park but I don't know how to prevent it from happening again. I'll try to attach a video. Oops! video won't load. I'll try to get a jpg. No go on photos either.
