V40 1999 | Ignition problems, won't start (sometimes).
Hello everyone, I'm new here so my apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place...
I have a 1999 V40 that seems to only start when it feels like it. Typically it starts fine when cold, but if you drive it somewhere and stop for ten mins or so, it doesn't start again (sometimes). It doesn't 'turn over' at all, just silence. The key turns all the way, but the ignition doesn't seem to engage. If you leave it for an hour or so, it will start up again no problems. The battery is fine. This problem is not consistent, sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't, which makes taking it to the garage difficult, everytime I go it starts up so I just look like a crazy person telling someone that my car won't start whilst sitting in a car that is running. It's very temperamental and rather annoying tbh. If anyone has any recommendations or experience with this, your input would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help! Stu |

2) Starter motor solenoid. 3) Starter motor. If you hear a click from the engine compartment when turning the key the solenoid is OK. Then it's either the ignition switch or the starter motor. Look at the starter motor. There's one large connector directly from the battery and a small connector from the ignition switch. Have someone turn the key while you measure the voltage on the small connector (starter motor) with either a multimeter or a test lamp. If the connector shows 12 volts when the key is turned the ignition switch is OK. Then it's the solenoid. Hit the solenoid with a hammer and try cranking. It may loosen up. |

Edit: -If you hear a click when turning the key it's NOT the ignition switch, but the starter motor. -My bad.
A click indicates a functioning solenoid and a non functioning starter motor/solenoid contacts. The solenoid engages the flywheel AND supplies voltage to the starter motor. |

If you've got any lights up on the dash when this occurs then you could be looking at an intermittent immobilizer issue, as one of mine used to do this.
