122 rich mixture
Here is a question to tease those who used to work on cars before chips took over. My 122 has a reasonably recent Tony Barrett engine in it (he does know how to do a nice refurb). When I fitted in a couple of years ago I did all the right things (new filters, plugs, points, leads, dis cap etc) but refitted the old carbs which are old! If I keep the mixture rich it pulls well but soon fouls the plugs matt-black, is rough on tickover and does about 20mpg. If I adjust the mixture to what should be right it is sluggish with poor throttle response. Incidentally, the distributor is still the original.
Do I have to do a carb exchange? Any other ideas? Should I just see a doctor?

RE: 122 rich mixture
I do not know the 122 but had a simular problem with my 240 when I had it. I got a carb recon. kit from my local carb. specialist, new jets and float etc and that cured the problem. Fairly strait forward to do.

RE: 122 rich mixture
This is reminiscent of a problem I had with a Princess 2200 many years ago - twin SU carbs. It had the bonus of frequently cutting out 4 miles after staring just as I tried to accelerate to turn right across a main road (and the PAS dies...)
Mine was cured by carb overhaul, correct oil in dashpot, and careful balancing of the carbs. I think the last was the most important. It also improved fuel comsumption to merely pitiful. |

RE: 122 rich mixture
Correction to the last message: 4 miles after STARTING. Staring is the state it reduced me repeatedly being stalled on the wrong side of the road with unexpectedly heavy steering. And 14 - 16 mpg.
The SU carbs are excellent, but if they are unbalanced the fuel consumption soars, and the cylinders get very different mixtures. Performance suffers. If you are not familiar with balancing (forgive me if you are - your message didn't mention it), take the air cleaner(s) off, and arm yourself with a thin tube 15" - 20" long (not critical). With the engine idling place one end of it at the bottom edge inside the mouth of each carb (where the piston is just starting to lift. The other end is for listening to. Try to keep position etc the same for both carbs (doesn't make a huge difference). Adjust the carb linkages - these vary on different cars - so that you get the same noise of inrushing air on both. Gunson make, or used to make, a device called the Carbalancer, basically a very simple depression guage. I didn't find it any easier to use. Personal preference I guess. Of course, this may not be what was wrong with yours - just trying to help! (-: |

RE: 122 rich mixture
Check the current carbs for correct jet sizes (if you havn't already done so) Replacements are the easy fix if the current set are beyond redemption (spindles too worn etc)
