Default KW coilover problem

Hi All,

Got a problem with my rear KW shock. Strut has pulled off of bush AGAIN. This happened exactly the same last year.

Any ideas why this is happening?

I raised the ride height after this happened before so its not running too low.

Am I safe to drive the car VERY cautiously for the next few days? What would happen if the strut came completely off? Would it just sit on the spring and bounce or would there be a catastophic failure?

I cant see what has happened in this picture. If you take close ups of the area it would be helpfull. Has the rubber bush broken? If so it would be possible to have poly ones made.

Bush is fine and where it should be. The actual strut is too far to the left. The metal hoop on the strut should be flush with the flange on the bush.

I can see it has slipped of the rubber bush. Is there a big penny washer in between the bush and the nut to hold it in place.

Yup!

There is a washer in there but its the standard one and smaller than the bush. Should it be bigger? There wasn't a bigger one in the kit... I see where your going with this... Nice one! I wonder?...

Have you spoken with the supplier of this kit?...there is clearly something wrong with the design for this to happen.

It is not cheap stuff!

Hi Don

You’re not wrong there! Nearly £900!

Got home at 20.30 and noticed it so I'll be calling them on Monday.

I have never heard of this happening to anyone else. I don't understand how this has happened to me, twice.

There is either a fault with my car or an installation problem IMO.

The washer thing has got me thinking...

There should not be a fault with your car as both top and bottom are fixed points... the top mount(s) maybe breaking up a bit, but that should not affect anything.

It is interesting though that I have not been able to get the exact bush needed for the lower mounting of the fully adjustable kit that I have on offer. We used to get our customers to press out the lower bush from an original damper, but now have a pair of machined metal bushes to do the job.

From your pictures, K & W are using a plain, straight bush, which I would think has been bonded in, rather than an 'hour glass' shaped one that has to be pressed into a shaped ring.....maybe just poorly bonded?

Hi Don

Well I'm not the only one!! A few people Volvospeed have had the same problem!

Yes it is a plain bush but it does have a slight lip at either end.

Do you think your 'machined metal bushes' would fit the hole and do the job?

I'd try and get some washers that are large enough to stop the shock sliding off. I'd also apply some Araldite to the the bush.
