He said there was an "orange" Alarm Activated but no code. Does that sound possible ?

Interesting update.

For the first time the alarm has just triggered with the "deactivate sensors" switch pressed in !

So could be a progressive failure. I am back at the garage next week for summat else so I will ask them to check= for codes again

There will be the orange triangle lit on the dash along with the message alarm triggered check car on the dim. As you turned off the interior movement sensor and still the alarm triggered it could be the battery in the siren is failing. It won't throw a code until it fails completely and the message on the dim will say alarm system service required when it throws a code of communication error. Vida can read what triggers the alarm but it won't be a fault code. It's in a sub menu of vehicle communication.

Strangely there is no orange triangle or alarm triggered message visible. I have seen that on just one occasion out of 20+ "triggers.

All indicators are pointing to a failing siren (leaking siren battery causing corrosion)

Yep - been there - got the T-shirt, on a previous XC70.

Not sure a battery swap will cure it as likelihood is that the board will be knackered as you say.

Why are they still £160+ - I would have thought these would be available more cheaply from the original manafacturer of the unit or cheap Chinese knock offs !

I didn't see any Chinese copy of those. But have seen few used stuff in eBay.
