Fuel duty is a massive income for governments which will hit the economy very badly as electric takes over so other taxes will have to increase heavily.
We will all have to pay more for using our cars or for not using them.
Once 5G mobile is established then it will be a trivial matter for road use to be automatically recorded and taxed. There could even be different prices for different roads and different times of day or night and higher charges in town centres to encourage public transport use to reduce congestion. All kinds of things are possible when everything becomes connected. Which explains the Government's reticence about Huaway in the 5G network. They cannot afford a delay in 5G because it will cost tens of millions in lost car excise duty from an increasing proportion of electric cars in lost fuel tax. It is inevitable that both road tax and taxes on fuel [including VAT] will have to be replaced with road use tax. They cannot tax the electricity because that cannot be distinguished from domestic and commercial/industrial use.
