It's random. I think it's less than Volvo's "limit" value though.

I'm doing the work myself though. If it needs doing, I might as well get it done.

You could buy a lot of oil for that! If the car is using excessive oil, I'd just make it regular routine to keep checking the oil and topping-up as necessary, whilst buying the oil as required. Not a chance would I'd spend that money at a garage, unless I was keeping the car long term (even then, it'd be questionable).

I suppose its different as you're doing the work yourself, so you're saving a lot in labour charges, but is it really necessary at this stage?

There is a risk of bores being scored by the carbon deposits. That would be my worry.
