Default V40 1.9D stalling on acceleration

Car stalls sometimes when accelerating at low revs (1200-1600), it has happened in 3rd, 4th and 5th, absolutely NO other observable symptoms, and no other pattern to it.

Turning the key to off then back to 2 and cranking always restarts the engine immediately and I can drive on.

The car has done 268k miles so I accept that things WILL wear out. But this feels like something small and simple.

I have suspected:
- fuel pump / regulator
- something electronic?
- diesel bug (treated the tank once with a double dose of Redex and it *seemed* to stop for a while, did stall once, stopped for a while again, but recently it's back with a vengeance)

Any other ideas? I also need to plug in my code reader I suppose. That can be my Tuesday night fun time.

Cool

When was the fuel filter last changed and were the 2 O rings included with the filter also changed ??
A problem with the fuel filter, or an air leak into the fuel system does not result in any fault codes.

Fuel filter was replaced earlier this year on schedule, it was stalling occasionally before it was changed, but I don't know if the O rings were changed, should they have been as part of the process? I can ask my mechanic if he did it

I'm not expecting fault codes for fuelling but am mainly aiming to rule out anything else.

The 2 O rings that are included with the fuel filter are supposed to be changed when the filter element is changed, but a lot of garages and owners fail to do that.

Fuel pressure regulators, either the one on the fuel rail or the one on the back of the high pressure pump, one of those will most likely be your problem, on my old v40 i had the same symptoms, in my case the regulator on the back of the high pressure pump was faulty, flagged a code on my cheapo code reader, replaced it and problem went away.

Fuel regulator has been replaced once, not sure which one, because of hunting symptoms at idle. Will check for fault codes and report back.

Pass them on anyway, might help people - even if they are not getting exactly the same trouble.

Anytime :-)

Mine had almost identical symptoms ... She would die when trying to accelerate but start string back up..

Anyways my investigations led me to the tank where the swirl tank was full of shat... wouldn't allow it to suck any fuel through to accelerate but had enough to tick over..

Easy to check and feels like a new car once cleaned out

Sorry for posting out-of-topic, but can you tell me which is your "cheapo code reader"?
I can't find one that works with my V40 1.9TD 2003... I need to read/clear DTCs and read live data (RPM, Air Flow, Turbo pressure, etc.)

Thank you guys!
