Unhappy LPG miss fires

I have a 2001 Duel-fuel V40 which is miss firing on LPG.
Have read that cleaning the fuel filter helps... but I am not sure what it looks like or where it is?

The petrol fuel filter is at the front of the rear wheel arch on the passenger side, there's a plastic cover you need to remove to get access. It's inside a can, I believe the plastic hose clips can get brittle so be prepared with jubilee clips just in case. I would just replace the filter, they're not very expensive (Volvo ones are about £7 from memory, EuroCarParts pattern ones less than a fiver).

There's a quick guide here

That link about the fuel filter applies to the petrol side of things, and not the LPG.

Is it a factory-fit bi-fuel car, or is it an LPG conversion?

Either way, servicing the LPG and ignition will possibly help.

Locating and replacing the LPG filter is a good place to start - location will depend on the installation, but it shouldn't be too difficult to trace back the LPG supply pipework.

LPG is very unforgiving of ignition components that are getting a bit tired. If there is a weak plug or lead then it will show up with LPG even though on petrol everything seems OK. LPG needs new spark plugs every 10,000 miles. Buy simple single-pin copper cored ones, not anything with fancy metals or multi-pins. If your car has plug leads and a dissy cap then replace the rotor arm and dissy cap, and consider a new set of leads. If the car has coil packs and plugs then you'll only need to fit the new plugs.

As they get on a bit then the LPG fuel distributor/vaporiser/stepper motor can start to play up, as can the LPG solenoids or injectors.

If it's a factory-fit then these are more likely to give you trouble than an after-market conversion. This is where it could start to get expensive so you need to eliminate the easy things first.

The last thing to check is your thermostat. If the thermostat is faulty and doesn't allow the engine to run hot enough then the LPG doesn't vaporise properly, and the car won't run very well. Does the temperature gauge read properly? Thinking about it some LPG cars don't have a temp gauge. If yours is one without, does the heater get really nice and toasty hot?

But do the simple stuff first and check out the spark plugs, rotor and dissy.

Cheers

Jack
