Very impressed with the towing capabilities of my B5 diesel. Hills are effortless, mpg is great , easily 28 mpg . My previous car Freelander 2 2.2 could only get 25mpg towing the same van.

Yep, find my D5 more than acceptable, it varies of course, maintaining 60mph into a stiff head wind will cost you 25mpg but overall I see 30 ish mpg towing.

I sort of look at it as just part of the holiday, if I want to get there it is what it is while I accept meandering along will be cheaper.

28 is great! I have no idea what I am doing wrong but just returned from a 1500 mile trip towing with my XC60 B5D and my average was 20!! No matter how hard I tried, it wouldn’t get better.

in my D5 (S90), pulling a very large double axle caravan, generally get about 24, though it drops a bit when I press on.
