1986 245 drivers seat
In my exhuberance for buying a 240 I failed to look under the rather attractive seat cover that adorned the drivers seat of the 240 I was buying.
I naively thought it was there to preserve what I imagined was a pristine grey tweed driver's seat, the rest of the interior was perfect why should I think anything else? On further inspection (..after buying it !) I discovered a rather nasty looking old pillow shoved into where the foam should be !! It looked the perfect place to find some duck eggs or a family of coypu... ...however, I digress! Can I replace this seat with any other type or does it have to be a 240? If you have any 240 driver's seat that wll fit my 1986 please let me know !, my wife has a sewing machine and will make me a grey tweed cover !!! |

seats
740 940 seats will not fit
for the time being you switch the guidrails over from the drivers seat to the passsenger seat and than at least have a decent drivers seat for the driver. It should not be to diffiucult to pick up a seat from the breakers yard, or anyone here on the forum |

Do I understand that a passenger seat will fit into the drivers side?
Would there be any problems in doing this? |

yes=
but you have to change the guide rails over fixings are not symetrical. Be aware-- when the seats are changed over the lumbarsupprot knob and the backrest knob are akward to reach. ========= Anyhow-- a drivers seat is not a rarity to obtain |

I have several driver's and passenger seats but distance would make it uneconomical.

If the upholstery is good, changing the foam base is easy. I think they're the same for all years. Just turn it over, remove the 'bars' at the front and rear, then pull off the hog rings on the sides- then the foam and upholstery should come off together. Next, remove carefully the 2 hog-rings from the bar in the foam to the bar in the upholstery.
Before you reassmelble, glue up any cracks and glue a thick layer of bulap so the springs don't poke through again. Its easier to do this rather than swapping the passenger to driver seat. Just change the foam! Also, it doesn't matter if the upholstery is different, as you can use your old one- it will give you more options. I just rebuilt my seats this way- I bought a complete interior and used the best of the pads for the drivers seats, and second best for the passenger. Feels like a new car. Brian |

Mmmmm ...upholstery ?!
There must have been some there once upon a time, but I think the former owner must have dropped a chainsaw on it ! It's now just a shabby pillow and two dodgy seat covers !! |
