Default Haldex Query

Hello

I recently purchased a late 2006 Volvo XC70 D5 185 Manual, I am making my way through a list of maintenance I want to get done for peace of mind.

The Haldex system, mine works as I have tested it up a wet grassy hill (Was much fun) but I would like to get this serviced, roughly how much would that cost? I contacted my local Volvo and the woman said they haven't done one before, so that didn't fill me with confidence!

Also how many generations of Haldex were in this model?

I see on the internet that they stuck the Gen 3 in my year but I find conflicting posts on this page?

Cheers Greg

Default Haldex Service

Hi, I also have tried to find a way of servicing the Haldex (AOC) on my 2005 XC70 - now at 130,000 miles - and finding it a very difficult job to attempt on a sloping driveway. So, armed with a service kit from Volvo and a bottle of fluid I approached my local garage. They refused to even try, saying “These never go wrong, why are you bothering?”
I was met with a similar response from my local Volvo agent - the service receptionist said: “My husband and I had 100,000 miles over 10 years out of ours without a problem”. They simply did not want to do this job on such an old car was the blunt answer. Well, my car is older but I want to get many more trouble-free miles out of it so I still want to service the Haldex; after all the kit supplied contains a filter and upgraded cover. I also have fresh oil for the rear differential and angle gear unit to renew at the same time.
So, at the moment it is still an outstanding service that I’d still like to do. Searching the web seems to indicate that fresh oil and a filter is a good idea at 40-50,000 intervals.

As a DIY project the trickiest jobs for me are the removal of the propeller shaft and exhaust pipe. If the car were on a hoist and accessible underneath I could make a puller for the coupling flange it may be possible.

Let us know how you get on.

Our phase 2 cars have generation 3 Haldex, as far as I know. P3 cars got gen 4.

Bill

Brilliant thanks for the informative reply!

Looking through my service book it seems it had a new pump and was serviced 30,000 miles ago.

The Volvo dealer didn’t even call me back in the end.
Its probably above my skill set to do on my own, I’ll contact the Audi specialist I’ve used in the past, they have serviced my previous Audi’s with Haldex systems so they should have an idea of what to do.

I’ll get all differential bits serviced at the same time.

Cheers Greg

the exhaust can be uncoupled from the rear hangers, spray with silcone spray first, set it on a milk crater etc.

release the prop shaft from rear coupler by removing the allen bolts and insert a bolt in one of the 2 blind unthreaded holes, use a pry bar and lever against the bolt. uncouple the center prop shaft hanger to allow enough movement to pop the rear end out. once out, I think theres a single 23mm nut to remove.
you will then have access to the filter.

The most difficult bit is likely to be re tightening the nut holding the flange on.

I have read a how to haldex service on here. It was a pre face lift V70 poss an XC.
Using a shortened 1/4" socket the filter bolts can be removed with the prop still in place...it's very tight but possible. BUT the new filter face plate is too thick to install so u have to reuse the old one.
I tried to do my AWD V70 R but the bolts were too rusted. I was forced to replace the oil only. The oil was disgusting and I did several flushes before I got to a point I was as happy as I was going to be.
Cheers
Bob
