Engine will restart after a few mins and then will run with a bit of rough idle (at low revs) for a while until engine management light goes off. Then I wait until the next time. Other then that issue I love this car.

Have taken car to main dealer for diagnosic, no issues identified. Running perfectly they said. Took car to Bosch specialist, who found pump timing out, but this has not remedied problem.

Have been down the route of replacing pump, which with removal and fitting will cost an arm and a leg, given the cars current value. I have followed Diesel Bobs recommendation re the Swansea diesel fitter. They very helpful and comparably cheap. Very quick turn around time as well.

I hope you get your problems sorted.
hi
another member had this problem 6 months ago and we found the fault at the pump, there is a 8 pin plug that sometimes gets bunged up with oil and dirt, cleaned it out with brake cleaner and it rectified his problem it may well be worth haveing a look, the plug is under the pump at the left side as you look at the engine follow the dipstick down and you will see it.
hope that helps

Hello all.
Icannot thank you allenough for your info and advice over the last week. There are obviously some knowledgeable people out there ! Ihave had my `new` car since last sat, 1st nov, and only yesterday did i manage to get it sorted. Of all the complicated and expensive things i was worrying about, the problem in the end was mind-numbingly simple. Trouble is,every problem on every car is slightly uniquso e. I had previously tried to remove the fuel feed unit (or as i originally thought, the fuel pump ! ) from the top of the tank, but could not loosen the plastic threaded retaining ring. Yesterday, i decided to have another go, and with the help of a pair of rubber gloves, i succeeded. To mysurprise, the feed pipe from the tank was blocked with dirt build up - the first definite thing i or the garage had found. pipe cleared, unit replaced, and after a little cranking, the car started, and - i`m almost afraid to say - has not missed a beat. amaybe now i can start enjoying my car. In all other respects, the car is great, being a P reg, with 91k on the clock, and almost complete corresponding paperwork, and is a very original car - i hope!
I have got a way to go to reack 400K, but i would like to think i could.
The only slight drawback with mycar is the stained boot carpets, and the fact that its an auto. wouls anyone know how many mpg i can expect?

All the best

Kev,

glad that it was something simple in the end - it's amazing where a diesel can draw air from if the fuel feed is partially restricted.

Hope you now enjoy driving the 850

Brian.

Thanks again for all your help. Hopefully the car will turn out to be a good drive. As i said before , it does seem to be very straight. I even got round to washing it today, and have not found anything out of place at all. I must say, it does look pretty good as it has 16" alloys - though bubbling a bit around the valves. Mind you i dont think it looks as nice as a T5 - always fancied the idea of one of them. How long have you been running yours, and have you had much trouble?
Take care

Thanks to all replies to my post. All hints and tips will be applied in an attempt to rectify the problem. I have every intention of hanging onto this car for quite a while. 400k seems a while away for me (currently 140) but if I get the intermittent fault sorted I will commit to investing in running the car on veggie oil, with a proper conversion.

In terms of identifying whether air is leaking from the system, does anyone have a suggestion about the best way for a fairly limited (but patient) amateur mechanic to carry out this check

Regard to all.

Thanks for the info on MPG. Thats a hell of a mileage you have done. How much of that have you\done, and what were your main problems (there must have been some !!! ). Must say i love driving the car, incredibly comfortable and quiet at 70. needs a good service though, my next job when i have been paid !
Had a look for rattle on front brakes today - couldnt find anything, but noticed outer drive shaft boot nearly split through, - not too bad though.
Speak soon
