I know very little about the S40 but can say this much:

Volvo is similar to VW in build quality and the 1.6 should be a fairly economical engine fuel wise.
The S40 of 99 vintage is a fairly new car in terms of construction and principal for Volvo whereas your Golf is very familiar to VW. Thus, be prepared for more problems that are "unheard of". As to actual costs, post in the S40 forum and they will help.

Remember, any individual car could be great or bad irrespective of the general model range, even Rolls-Royce made a few lemon cars.

George

Not unduly worried about petrol consumption unless of course its really scary ,as for a td it would be my first choice but I live in the scottish highlands so you can imagine they tend to be a bit scarce, steve
