After the above the oil filler cap was quite hot to the touch ie it was almost burning my hand.
Is that too hot?
This was before I fitted the undertray and with the hood open and the front of the car jacked up.

The oil cap will surely be too hot to touch on any engine. However on my car the top of the engine was radiating heat like it was on fire. It was very clearly very different than any other car I had before. Now, we are all aware that engines get hot, at least 100C if not more at the top of the engine. But it was just way way too much heat from the engine. On top of this, there are other S60 owners that mentioned a similar thing - of course, unless someone is using an infrared thermometer, the debate will be 'all engines are hot'. As I say, after inspecting/fixing several items after purchasing the car, now the engine bay feels perfectly normal to me, no longer radiating that crazy heat from there.

Hi!

If you look into the tow bar instructions, it actually requires one of these to be installed on the 2.4 Non-turbo engines when installing a tow bar, so I assume it will help improve cooling.

However, if buying a cheaper ebay version, make sure it has the correct cooling ducts to get air flow where wanted.

Given a table I saw once about airresistance, where 30% (!!!) supposedly was created in the enginebay, I do still want one as it could potentially lower my fuelconsumption by up to 10% (wild guess).
I fitted one last week, drove the motorway today for the first time. Engine sounds more raw, definitively not quieter. Will report back on economy after 500km trip next week (Corona permitting). So far no 30% increase in fuel economy but hard to base that on a 40km trip.

Had to bend the attachment tabs straight and used 20mm M8 stainless steel bolts, they didn't have shorter ones at my local hardwarestore (with matching large SS rings of 24mm diameter). But you could probably fit 40mm bolts in most positions as long as e.g. the hose between the turbo and the intercooler doesn't get in the way. My enginesupportframe has some serious damage (still trustworthy, but a serious dent in it), not sure if I did this myself (doubt it), the police (former owner) caused it or I got stiffed when the engine was replaced and they gave me the worst supportframe between the old and the swap-frame.

As for fitment: it does touch the underside of the engine (might be a part of the gearbox linkage to the Haldex coupling, so indeed AWD related), so I might look into that, but it bends far enough so that I could tighten all bolts properly.

Just finished the 500+ km roundtrip. Mostly 100km/h, a little 110km/h and a few roadworks with 90km/h. Some 30km innercity.

Average 6,3l/100km (44.8mpg) according to the dashboard. Compare with some data from here (link to data used for the mpg in my sig), suggests two things:
- 8 out of 10 times my dashboard meter is too optimistic.
- despite the optimism from the dash, it might use a little less diesel but just 500km with it is too early to tell for sure. But well under 7l/100km is not bad given my average of 7.8l/100km. Maybe seeing if I easily get 1000km on this tank would be a better test. Normally I do this with clenched buttocks.

I hate the sound. There's a definitive vibration at motorway speeds as if it is a Subaru with a 4" muffler. It is kind of a hoarse sound, if that makes sense. I added some oil to rule out it was running low and that was causing the extra noise. I should remove it to make sure it IS the splash-guard/enginetray causing this.

all volvo modular engines will get silly hot - aluminium is an excellent heat sink

Was it the under tray causing the sound?

My v70 (not X-cross) 53 plate, has been without an engine undertray for 10+ years, but I’m planning a 3K trip this summer, so may fit an under tray ….

Since you've done without for >10 years, I'd skip the tray were I you.
I've 20 years owning/driving 3 non-turbo, FWD V70s. None had the tray.
The noise abating results were said to be for diesel cars.
Still, even though we never got the diesels in No. America, a junkyard guy said he'd seen some...and that the trailing ears were always broken off.

My engines' bays never showed any appreciable dirt accumulation.

R-P's records are good but they match most in 'inconclusiveness of results' because speeds vary, terrain varies, seasons change and sample sizes vary.
His recent trip was much in the 100kph range (slow by any continent's standards). That'll improve fuel economy more than anything.

What I'm trying to convey is that even with a tray, you'll never be able to nail down any pattern of fuel consumption change except for dead-matched sample periods.
Even then there'll be fluctuations.

I wouldn't mind seeing for myself if a tray would improve my fuel economy or under-bonnet filth, but the cost of purchasing one simply stops me.

Only recently -and only once so far- have I seen this tray on deep discount.
Maybe this extraneous part for vehicles 12 years out of production is sold out?.
Perhaps few are kept on hand and are ordered as needed from a plastic blow molding supplier.
Once a form is made, they can't claim a "retooling fee".

A 3,000 mile trip? Care to share the approximate itinerary?

As someone who was experimenting with things trying to get mpg up, and keeping very accurate records, I'm pretty confident in saying the difference made by adding the undertray was either zero or so close to it as to make no difference

What it does do is give you one more job to do when you're going an oil change, and make it harder to retrieve dropped spanners / sockets / nuts and bolts

Still I've left it on now having taken the time to fit it because it does protect against filth and despite the mpg it surely must improve aerodynamics

I haven't noticed any appreciable difference to noise levels but then I tend to have music up fairly loud most of the time anyway so if there is an audible nuisance to be fair it's probably me

Thanks for the feedback and the view on the cost/benefit not really being there, though for 42 notes I might still go for one.

The itinerary is going 'around' Switzerland. So out from Blighty and through Belgium/Luxembourg and then stopping in Heidelberg. Then onto Upper Austria for nearly a week. Head south to Lake Garda (last time the horn failed and I really missed it) for a night then to Sirmione for several. The return trip is via some friends in the French Alps and finally an overnight stay at Langres until back home in the UK.

I've done this trip three times already or at least a variation on a theme. Fingers crossed

That was my thinking as well it was 40 quid I think on ebay. Didn't come with bolts though fortunately a rummage in the garage provided them plus some washers

Might want to plan ahead a bit and check you have them, or order some (x 6 I think ? Or is it 7..)
