Default Headlight bulb warning?

Re. 2007 model S80: A warning message appeared of 'main headlight bulb failure' and local Volvo specialist garage said it was a sign gas xenon bulbs were failing.
Rybrook Volvo charges c. £140 each bulb, although there are many Xenon offers on line, including Halfords at £41 for a 35w Osram bulb: (And owners get 8% discount from halfords.)
The puzzle is how can i tell the specification of bulbs in my car, and whether a Halfords alternative will work just as well as a Volvo-branded one?

You can find the details in S80 Owners manual:

https://www.volvocars.com/uk/support/car/s80/2006w40

I think Osram bulbs were branded by Volvo, and almost surely are 35 W.

Just check the Owners manual for your model year.

And of course you will know for sure when you see the old bulbs...

Just make sure you replace both bulbs, because the other one will soon follow...

For Xenon lamps the user's manual isn't very helpful, as they are of the opinion that only specialist should replace these, so they refere to the workshop.
However, Volvo uses 1DS type lamps.

MAIN beam is a standard filament bulb isn't it? I have never heard of your
'main headlight bulb failure' message coming up before.

Mine on my 09 V70 are Philips 1DS and they are much cheaper on Amazon than the dealer. You get a pair for less than one at the dealer. It is best to change them in pairs.
