Exclamation Airbox Issues

2011 XC70

When I was servicing my car yesterday, I discovered that the pipe that feeds the airbox (pictured below) was not seated into the airbox, leaving a large gap. I tried to seat it into the box, but it just pulled it out the other end, so it's like my airbox is sat ~25mm too far back. Any ideas what's happened? I can't make any sense of it.

As a secondary issue - the filter was a real struggle to fit in the housing. I had this issue last time I changed it a few years back, but put it down to just a manufacturing defect on the filter... but it's the same issue again this time. OEM filter used (31370161). I can just about close it but it involves forcing the lid down, and even then some of the screws barely reach their holes, leaving sections of the orange filter still visible (pictured below).

It's the poorly made airbox.
I had mine replaced after the dealer stripped the threads whilst trying to cram in the latest incarnation of airfiler

I've had the same issue
It's the poorly made airbox.
I had mine replaced after the dealer stripped the threads whilst trying to cram in the latest incarnation of airfilter which is clearly too large.

My first air box left the intact scoop in the same slightly disconnected position.
The peg at the rear right corner which slots into a fixing on the innerwing controls the final position.
I actually cut mine off, made an aluminium strengthener/extender and riveted it back on so it sat square.
Thankfully the new airbox fits perfectly without modifications.
If you take the lid off, pop it out of the rear mount then line it up so the scoop fits correctly, you'll see what I mean. The rear peg will not be lined up with the inner wing fixing.

Another way round it would be to fashion a rubber sleeve to cover the gap. Perhaps a section of wheelbarrow inner tube cut and stretched over.

Re the ill fitting air filter, if your sticking with Volvo oe, it would seem the new airbox has been tweeked slightly to sort out the misalignment and at the same time the box has been slightly altered along with air filter dimensions.
You may be best getting an aftermarket filter

...and finally. Your images are not only viewable on my phone and laptop but they also accurately document your issue without you taking more.

HTH

Good video.
What stops the radiator from returning back to where it came from?

If you watch video closely, you will see that pin from that plastic is going in hole. Not at front or behind radiator. It's hole, so that's preventing moving radiator

Or I should record how looks that plastic cover from other side, that has plastic pin. Sorry

I couldn't have watched any closer. That detail wasn't there but your pictures explain what holds the radiator in place.
I've just checked mine and it has always been in the correct location, so for my scenario it was the airbox locating peg causing the issue but I concur that it is possible for someone to have removed the radiator locating pegs(not sure why) and subsequently the radiator & air scoop connector move backwards.

Bomster - let us know what you find. It'll help someone else in the future, that's for sure.
