Default Lesser and Lesser ...

Just completed a 200 mile round trip in MY90 745 through Surrey and West/East Sussex via motorways, highways and byways meeting good driver, bad driver, drunken (or clearly on some substance at 1.30pm!!), motor bikes and cyclists.

Spotted just one P Reg 940 early am yesterday in Morrisons' car park in Crowborough. However, a couple of 'younger' Volvo's bowed and acknowledged age - Bob

A rare sighting of the Lesser Spotted 745! Strangely there's a 1990 745 near me in Silver. Nothing too strange about that but apart from the fact it's G reg (mine is an F) the number plate is very similar to mine (1 or 2 digits different out of the 3 digits) and the letters are the same - no surprise then to learn it was also originally supplied by Squire Furneaux of Chobham.

Other than that and occasionally a silver 240GLT on an F, there aren't many round this part of the world.

Oh the humanities!!! What appalling butchery of the English language.

Fewer and fewer, not lesser and lesser.

Except that it could be a reference to the lesser-spotted 740!

I was cursed with an English teacher as a mother. It has led to many a bloodied nose as I corrected grammar and pronunciation at inopportune moments...

You didn't have to thump them as well as correcting their grammar Ash!

The thing is, there is a double-edged irony in the words "lesser and lesser". With the demise in numbers of cars that were once common on the roads (7/9xx) in favour of characterless Euro-Blobs with dubious build quality and reliability (we won't mention the cheap ones that are even worse!) there has been a demise in the correct use and pronounciation of the English language.

People starting sentences with conjunctions for example, using words as synonyms that really aren't synonyms, incorrect pronounciation of the letter "H" - the list goes on.

My teachers have all been lovely so far. And. They would all be kind towards your grammar and mine.

Fowler is a good guide. Ultimately rules of spelling and grammar are there for other people, not for me. I notice that people who purport to correct me are ignorant. Knowledgeable know alls. I try to refrain from correcting the ignorant whom I encounter.

Let us get on with nattering and if we don't quite understand each other, sort it out as we go.
