Immediate problem solved. I managed to walk 2.5 miles - Big deal for me; asthmatic, leg injury from motorcycle accident and arthritis in knee - to pick up a T15 screwdriver and after a bit of a struggle managed to get the ignition component off.
The steering lock still doesn't turn but I am now able to start the engine with a screwdriver and get it to a garage to replace the steering lock!

OK, so just for clarity.
A new steering lock unit is about £200. I can get a used one for £50 with the key. If I fit this am I right in saying that the key supplied with the lock will start the car but I'll still have to use the old key fob to lock and unlock the car? If so, is there any way to re program the fob to lock and unlock also, or am I doomed to using two keys?

do you have a combined folding key blade within the remote? the remote cannot be coded to another vehicle , but the ignition key should be possible at a dealer .

Yes I have the folder key in the remote type. OK so buying a used one is going be a waste of time then. So no matter what happens I'll have a separate key to start it and another to lock/unlock?

Did you know you can separate the ignition key part from the remote , there is a small torx screw inside which holds them together .

Jammed steering lock
Had same thing happen on my xc70 in Tesco’s car park.
Separated electrical switch from mechanical key switch. Then started car with screwdriver to get it home - thankfully steering not locked. (Locking lug snapped) Removed mechanical switch, took it apart, and a small broken lug fell out. Put it all back together without lug, and it’s now been working for close on 2 years. Did use car for several days using screwdriver on electrical switch, - after taking off mechanical lock, and before taking it apart to find broken locking lug. Think I’ve lost steering lock ability, (don’t notice just get in and start)(potential thief would still think it had steering lock) Removed anti theft screws by loosening with centre punch & small chisel. Total cost £0 and a few hrs labour. I assume too late for Phooey but, Hope this helps someone in future. Just noticed Phooey lives in same town as me. How did you eventually get out of problem ?

same thing happened to me a while back.
got it to turn in the end by a little wd40 on the key and then tapping/hitting the part where the key goes in with the end of a metal dinner knife. the tapping was the thing that fixed it |

I had this last week, turned out it was muck on the key. The muck had lodged in the ignition barrel as well, seemingly, so my spare key didn't work either.
I gave my key a good clean, lightly oiled it with sewing machine/hair clipper oil and slid it in and out of the lock a few times. The ignition barrel is now working like a charm (touch wood).
