XC90 engine failure - HELP
Ok then
My wife’s XC90 2.4 D5 2010 Model, FSH with 91k miles We were driving the car today when a noise developed under the bonnet. To cut a long storey short it looks like the Aux belt had shredded and some of it has gone into the timing belt causing the timing belt to jump a tooth. Vehicle will now not start _ ? Compression. Do I repair Do I seek a new engine Or do I sell it as is. Took it for an MOT yesterday and it passed with flying colours All help appreciated Thanks |

and pay us for not telling anyone
On a more serious note, it is a shame you tried to start it, as that is what might cause the damage if there is any. I would speak to a specialist Volvo independent, and see what they say, it is possible you can replace timing belt, and other belt and the engine is ok, (REALLY must not try and start it again) Then I would think about selling it. Regarding scrapping it, I would only do that if you can afford it and get another car. no hassle then |

As above, try repair first see what you end up with.

You may get better guidance from someone in the Phase 1 XC90 forum, I'm sure you are not the first to have suffered a belt failure. Good luck. |

The 2.4D is an interference engine which means that in the instance of belt failure the valves will hit the pistons and in essence cause substantial damage (wrecked).
That said I have known people (not Volvo owners) who have had a belt jump a tooth and been fine. Don’t start or attempt to start the vehicle. You will need to have the engine advanced to top dead centre and the crank locked (with belt off), I am not sure what sequence you would use as I usually advance crank to lock position with belt on then set TDC. I would think that a good reputable mechanic 👨*🔧 would do this work at around the 200-350 quid mark and you may be up and running again. Should this not be a fix I would expect rapidly rising bills to the point at which it may be reckon time (refurbished engine). I would be interested to know how you get on. |
