Unfortunately, or thankfully I discovered some pretty serious rust on the sill of my 3.0 auto, made no sense to repair as I had a perfectly good shell in the 2.5 manual sitting, so 3.0 being fitted to manual car this week with a lightened flywheel and 850r clutch.

I've had the 3.0 auto for 6 years and never thought I'd part with it but it's led a tough life and the other car is solid, had the top end done on the 3.0 2 years ago so I know it's in good condition unlike the 2.5 motor.

Well if nothing else the rust helped you decide!

Should be quite lively as well, i think Volvo have a habit of altering axle ratios so none of the cars are that much livelier than their larger engined counterparts so the axle ratio might well be lower but be very lively with the 3.0 under the bonnet!

I checked if the 2.5 car had a lsd but unfortunately not, forgot to check the ratio though, I don't do a lot of, motorway miles these days so a higher ratio diff would be preferable for acceleration, right?

Plan to pull off the 3.0 axle regardless as I want the softer nivo leaf to go with my coil overs so I can lower it.

If you want out and out acceleration you want a low ratio diff such as 4.11:1 or 3.91:1, if you want more relaxed cruising then you want a higher ratio diff such as a 3.73:1 or 3.54:1 or, if you're really lucky and can find one, a 3.31:1 which is the highest diff ratio i know of in the 7/9xx series.

Just for the sake of clarity, it's worth remembering the differential is a reduction gearbox so the higher the number, the greater the reduction and the lower the ratio.

For example, to get 1000 wheel rpm with a 4.1:1 diff, the propshaft will have to turn 4100 times a minute.
To get the same 1000 wheel rpm with a 3.31 diff, the propshaft only needs to turn 3310 times a minute.

Yes Dave, you are right - 2.5 was 4.1:1 whereas 3.0 was 3.73:1, regardless of gearbox.

The lower axle ratio on the 2.5 I guess this was a vain attempt to compensate for the smaller engine's lack of torque. I've owned all four combinations - 2.5 and 3.0, manual and auto. With the 2.5's I was always conscious of it being a smaller engine having to work a lot harder. The 3.0 is the engine this car should have - the extra 0.5 litre really does make a noticeable difference in driveability.

I currently own a 2.5 and it’s vastly different to the 3.0 - even in the “de-tuned” 180bhp spec in a 1997 s90 that I previously owned.
Over 3k rpm @ 70 is not good for MPG 🤣
Only way forward is to +T the 2.5 😏

Cheers

Good to know, I have a E46 M3 and a 4.1 diff is a popular mod on them to improve low end pick up, my mechanic is swapping the motors on the 960 this week, I've gone with a lightened single mass flywheel too which should help!
