Does Your Gearstick Wobble At Idle?
Weird one, but as per the title chaps...
My B230FK with M90 manual transmission now idles and drives well, plugs/cap/rotor/ICV are all new, filters are clean, it's locked in at a steady 800rpm when warm and shows no codes when scanned... However, every now and then when idling in neutral (Perhaps once every 3 seconds or so) I see a slight jerk/wobble of the gearstick, this ties in with the engine producing a very slight shudder/kick every now and then when idling/in neutral. Usually with other cars there'd be another one I can look at but 940's are a rare beast so I thought I'd ask on the forum... Do your manual 940's do this? Is it business as usual? TIA |

My engine/gearstick does wobble a bit on initial start-up and iding but eventually settles down quite smooth after a minute or so. I think my engine mounts are pretty bad though which certainly wont help.

Not usual, but the 'wobble' of the gear stick may be in sympathy with the engine 'flutter' and more noticeable due to the engine and gearbox mounts getting a little soft with age. Bob.

Maybe not relevant Joe and both of these are a long time ago now (one 30 years ago) but on an old 740GLE manual i bought as a spares car, that would do the wobbly stick trick when it fluffed a bit, that was down as Bob suggested to worn mounts on the gearbox and engine but also wear in the gear linkage from lever to box (M46 box on that one) and as the car hadn't been used for a while, ran a bit lumpy anyway.
The second was a fairly young (3-4 years old) low mileage 240 estate with the M47 box, that had slightly worn layshaft bearings in the gearbox so with the clutch out at idle, it quite often "zizzed" a fair bit on the gear lever. In 4th (direct drive) it went totally quiet but in 5th, could occasionally "zizz" a bit at certain revs, the first 3 ratios it also did the same but not often in the lower gears thankfully. Maybe useful, maybe not, but food for thought either way!

Should it be down to the gear shift assembly, I believe (although I have never had look into it) that there is a plastic spacer (or something) in the shift connections that together with the gear stick itself can be tweaked/adjusted very slightly all from on top inside the car. This is only what I vaguely remember reading somewhere .... so it might be total tosh!!

I didn't pay too much attention to the linkage and gearstick mechanism when I did my clutch but I'm pretty sure it's a metal plate that bolts in and houses the mechanism. So most of your problem will most likely be how the engine idles (or if a mount has gone and is allowing too much movement, makes the car shake like a V8 muscle car).
I know my linkage needs a rebuild as it's pretty worn (mostly short journeys in its life with lots of stop start driving and changes in speed limits). It's taken to clunking into gear more than normal recently, just trying to decide what material to make the new bushes on the linkage out of (I'm thinking Delrin would probably be best but I also have some PEEK laying around but I'm concerned it may be a bit too hard).

Mine does it, shudder and all, to my much-documented chagrin!!
My old manual 940 Estate with M90 did it too. I think its just a Redblock thing.

My gearstick loves a good wobble, its not idle for long, grows as well as pinnoccios nose.
