Newbie! 2005 S40 SE 2.0D - Help with tyres
Hi Guys,
I hope I've posted this in the right place. I've recently purchased a 2005 S40 SE 2.0D with 205 50 zr17 tyres. I have picked up the car as a second vehicle for work, as I am doing approx 850miles per week. Please could you guys advise me on the cheapest (I know unlikely - but important!), best tyres for my car, given the high mileage I do? Do I change size, what brand, any experience with high mileage? Thanks in anticipation! |

225/45/R17 tend to be much more common and therefore cheaper. When I got new tyres last week I moved to them.

As above, if changing all 4 go for 225/45/17 and Uniroyal RainSport 3 tyres. I have them on the Merc and they are the best all round tyres I've ever had and are £54.90 each on Camskill which is half what my local fitter wanted for them in 205/50/17 size.
https://www.camskill.co.uk/m54b0s16p..._Noise%3A_71dB They can handle the attack from 370 AMG horses and my heavy right foot in the wet so they'll be fine on an S40

Just for reference I got Michelin CrossClimates as I'd heard great things about them, as I'm moving to Scotland thought it might be a wise choice! £108 per tyre fitted.

I think you have made a wise choice. I did the same during March some 8000 miles ago, changing from OE Continentals. The Michelins are much quieter and the car (C30 D2) is nicer to drive. It might seem strange changing to CrossClimates at the end of winter but I want to see how well they last during good weather and if they're any good in winter with some wear in them. Michelin claim they are a summer tyre with all weather properties,

Er, I say they don't wheel spin when there is over 2mm tread remaining anyway, amazing performance they seem to grip just as well on the limit. For the fist time in my life I had my front tyres down to the metals on the inside and it still performed well, as soon as I discovered that I promptly drove like a nun to the nearest tyre shop mind... for me Continentals ruin the car, too hard and loud, I know lots of people who use laufens, hankook budget brand, ok tyre, noticeably louder imo but you can't argue with the price probably get them fitted around £50 a corner |
