2012-2016 5 cylinder D4/5 - oil consumption: a common issue?

A friend of mine has some 1L @ 6000 miles oil consumption in a 163 hp 5 cylinder diesel, but I thought this is only a problem with VEA engines.

My question is - are VEA engines the only ones that burn oil? What do you know about the D4/D5 engines fitted in 2012-2016 cars (180 & 215hp), is oil consumption a common problem? Looking for a XC70 AWD with these engines and I'm a bit worried about this problem, and what could cause it (piston rings, etc).

5 cylinders do not inherently have any common oil consumption issues. Oil consumption on the VEA is common as is lots of other faults. However they did modify the rings on the VEA to help with the issue.

You say consumption of 1 litre to 6000 miles?? This is hardly an issue. Volvo guidelines on oil consumption are 1 litre to 1000 miles before it is considered a problem.

I recently put 3/4 litres in my D4 5 pot after 8000miles.

This has pushed it to 3 bars on the dash (didn't recheck the dipstick (full size)). So say 0.5litre for 8000miles. Will probably change the PCV when its due for a oil change in September at circa 90k miles. Seems to be slightly oily at this location.

Just this week got the Low Oil warning on my 2012 V70 D5, with the instruction to add half a litre. That's just about 9000 miles since the last oil change, with no topping up in the meantime.
