There is a notable difference in sidewall height and tyre width between the different approved tyre sizes.
This is very likely to have influence on the behavior of the car, most probably while cornering.
Some of the safety features, such as those that take readings of G-forces and the spatious position of the car,
may need to know about the size of the tyres/wheels in order to work properly.

If I was you I would just do it and see if anything bad happens. I mean it is only a software change so what's the worst that can happen?

Have a price list from my dealer for the winter wheels packages w a range of tyres - anyone interested in me posting this? Considering winters for my XC90 Inscrip Pro - have the 275/40 21 boots on the thing so something a bit better suited to winter would be good - range of wheels sized 18", 19" and 20".

For info some detail on the rims here https://accessories.volvocars.com/en...-winter-wheels

And do you guys change the whole wheels?
On my current XC60 I have 18" wheels and changing just summer/winter tyres. Now I am about to order a new XC90, which will come with 20" wheels and there I am also inclined to changing just tyres. This way I get nice wheels throughout the whole year, plus no hassle with changing wheels at home. And as I read now, no need for software update every time

I have always just changed tyres but on my Volvo because of 21" rims and cost of tyres it paid to get some 19" Rims and tyres and swap wheels

I would go smaller diameter for winter tyres, as they are usually narrower also, which is clearly better in the snow, not to mention cheaper.

I think it's 19" minimum on the XC90.

19" minimum on T8 XC90s; 18" on other engine variants.
