Oil Leak
Morning all, whilst changing my front brake pads yesterday I notices I've got a slight oil leak on my gearbox (460 2.0 CDI '95) which is coming out from the nearside driveshaft junction.
From looking at the driveshaft there is a plate over, held with 3 bolts and I am wondering what I am likely to find inside so Im prepared before starting the job. I am assuming there is going to be a gasket behind this plate, is this the likely breach causing the leak ? and does this plate hold the driveshaft in place or is it popped in with a circlip ? Finally if anyone has a haynes close to hand could you let me know the amount of oil needed to refill the box since I might as well replace with new after draining. Thanks all in advance, Col |

This thick rubber boot is only held in place with the metal ring and the 3 bolts.
The oil you see is the GEARBOX oil. there is no gasket behind it . This is it so check your gearbox oil level and get a replacement gaiter from volvo. But before rushing out and buying a replacement check the bolts are tight. Assuming the 460 is the same as the 480 then there is no clip holding the driveshaft in , it is a push fit but be very careful removing and replacing the driveshaft. |

Thanks, will try cleaning up and tightening after a top up, as long as there arnt any splits on the boot, and keep an eye on it for a few days.
The leak isnt as bad as '****ing out' but being on the driveshaft it splattered and looks worse. At least I know that there wont be any fighting to 'pop' the shaft out if worse case it needs stripping, cleaning up, and a set of new rubber on it. |
