Now, I suspect some off topic posts. So about the new owner's questions...

.
I don't think the lawyer had the intelligence and foresight to have got that far ahead!

It's still sort of on-topic, still about dead bodies at least!

I would say you have the AW70 box. Both my former 2.0 auto estates had that box, the slightly harsh kickdown you describe affected one of mine and was helped a lot by a gearbox flush and oil/filter change.

The B200 motors are great, tough engines that will do big miles (I’ve had three 2.0 cars, two auto estates and my current manual saloon) but paired with the auto box they’re not quick cars by any means, and will be surprisingly thirsty (I averaged 19mpg with my estates). The performance you describe sounds absolutely in line with what i’d expect.

The light clusters should work fine when the plastics are replaced-if not, consult with the fuse box under the ashtray 🙂

The whine sounds like diff to me, but it could be a wheelbearing. All simple enough stuff to sort. Bear in mind the car’s former passengers weren’t too concerned with road noise, so soundproofing is likely to be minimal!

I’d get your coilovers set up by someone clued in to that side of things. All my 740s have been softly sprung but not too bouncy...it sounds well kitted out though, so some proper attention should sort it.

Keep us posted on how the conversion goes!

The lawyer in the made up fictional situation might well be as you say.

I learnt about lawyers in court.

Watching and listening to lawyers in court. Occasionally someone missed the point. Rarely someone put forward a point that their client probably insisted on, but the point harmed their case. Lawyers have trained and are diligent, they address the necessary points, and they can read a witness and lead the unwitting witness to disclose the whole truth like what how they should...

Pssst. I can tell some true life tales about lawyers who have c*cked up in court .... but who among mankind has not c*cked up?

Language Stephen....

I'm waiting for Phil to reply with some hearse-related quip such as "Over my dead body" or similar!

Given the thing on YouTube that i quoted was from America Stephen, i can honestly believe it was a genuine quote.

Some people are just born unconscious incompetents, the trouble is they spend time at academic establishments and get certificates pertaining to certain subjects and then enter that chosen profession.

I have met unconscious incompetents in all walks of trade and no-trade but not very many unconscious incompetents actually get through the rigorous process to become members of professions. Except me. Useless me. I got in to two professions.

Are we off topic?

I’m sure! What a small Volvoworld it is! My silver 740 saloon is a bit more anonymous than your Corpsemobile, but as far as i know it’s the only one in the area, so I’m sure we’ll spy each other around! If you ever need to do anything on the wagon that requires an extra pair of hands, give me a shout-always happy to help out a fellow 740 pilot!

Thanks for the offer of help, may well take you up on it at some point! I'll keep an eye out for a silver 740.

Yes, 70/71/72 series are incredibly reliable. Mine ended up with over 200k on it and no work ever required except for the regular fluid (and less frequent filter) changes.

Yes, it does so you can drop the fluid if you want to rather than use a pipe down the dipstick tube as Dave has suggested. Be careful as the plug is quite small and I seem to remember it sits in a recess in the sump pan.

That's why i went with the extraction pump down the dipstick tube Kev. The fact it's in a recess means there is fluid around the drain hole so you're not getting the dirtiest fluid out which will be at the bottom. Might only be a small amount but if it's dirty, that's all you need to damage the box.

I'm not normally a fan of using the extraction pumps but on this occasion, i think it does a better job than the drain plug.

Conversely on my other beast, the drain plug is right at the very bottom of the extension housing on the box (FWD and it has an extension housing! ) so i can get all the dirt out with the fluid. As such i wouldn't use the pump on that except to remove excess fluid if i accidentally overfilled it.

Here's a good example Dave......

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...ice-asc&page=1

Production of the S/V90 technically ended in February 98 but this hearse is on a V-plate which means it had to have been registered September 99 onwards.

This one is wrongly listed as a 960 - it would have been a 90 at that age and the centre console proves it. Move to the new naming format was for 97 model year - but an easy mistake for the uninitiated as none of the full stretch conversions carried any model badge.
