Default XC90 2010 model - Engine failure

Ok then

My wife’s XC90 2.4 D5 2010 Model, FSH with 91k miles

We were driving the car today when a noise developed under the bonnet.
To cut a long storey short it looks like the Aux belt had shredded and some of it has gone into the timing belt causing the timing belt to jump a tooth.
Vehicle will now not start _ ? Compression.

Do I repair
Do I seek a new engine
Or do I sell it as is.

Took it for an MOT yesterday and it passed with flying colours

All help appreciated

Thanks

Sorry to hear that.

In all likelihood, your current engine is damaged beyond the possibility of economic repair. You could spend quite a bit of money proving that. Scrap value will be next to nothing as compared to a running vehicle.

I'd therefore be considering a second-hand unit from a scrapper and using a good independent to fit it. There are currently MY 2010 D5 units being advertised on eBay for between £1k and £3k. If in good condition, I'd say (based on Autotrader today) that in working condition your car would be worth somewhere between 7k and 9k in a private sale.

Are you sure the timing belt jumped?

Are you sure the no-start is due to valve-piston damage and thus lack of compression?

You can start and run the engine briefly with no aux belt (no air con, no water pump etc but it will run)

Unfortunately this is by far the most common cause of early death of a D5 - the AUX belt going and taking the timing belt out with it.

If the sound of the engine turning over on the starter is now a continuous whine like a washing machine then you have Valve and cylinder head damage. Often these can be fixed with a new/re-con cylinder head - however I have heard more than one story where an subsequently rebuilt engine has once again thrown the belt later in life, so I would look at a replacement. The labour cost of taking a head off is quite high so there really isn't much of a saving.

There used to be a company in Huddersfield advertising used engines on e-bay for a fully fitted inclusive price but I can't seem to find them. The D5 is so reliable that used engines are available at reasonable cost.

As has been said probably the most costly thing you can do is sell the car "as-is" and buy another.

Unfortunate. Serpentine belt failure is 8/10 time cam belt failure on the D5 engines. Still surprised this happened at such low miles. Do I remember a serpentine tensioner design problem on those years? Maybe google a little about it.

If you go the used engine route, have it replaced by all means by a garage who reallly knows these cars, not just a random place who works on 2-3 volvos / year

Good luck getting it sorted - strangely mine (MY2012 D5) was making a funny noise at 91k which was power steering related, and at the same time they found that they also found the aux belt was heavily frayed and replaced that and the plastic cover - I didn't realise an aux belt failure could have such disastrous consequences on these.
