Default Service and general confusion

Hi. I'm a C30 enthusiast, coveted them for a while before finally buying one in 2016.

I've just given it its second service at a Volvo specialist garage. The first service was a breeze; however, this second service has flagged up a few things that I'm concerned about and was hoping you might be able to offer some advice.

I'll pre-warn you that despite my car enthusiasm, I don't know much about maintaining them.

These are the comments the garage left me with:

‘Fuel filter - when changed?’

Need two new front tyres (which I was expecting)

Intake breather hose damaged/broken (they said I should get this fixed quite soon)

‘Additive system low??’ (No idea what that means, or the question marks.)

At the end he said there was nothing really to worry about. Nothing terribly wrong and that it was a great car and that he’d really enjoyed driving it (well, you would, wouldn't you?!)

I’m feeling a bit out of my depth with this. Money is tight at the moment, especially after the above service cost of £350, so for now I can only really afford what’s absolutely necessary.

I've looked through the service history and I believe the fuel filter was changed in 2015. It hasn't done the 37,5000 miles since then that Volvo refer to in their service manual, so I'm not sure if I should do this or not.

A friend recommended buying tyres through black circle and getting a garage to fit them, although a very brief look at their website seems to suggest they can fit them and it looks like it would work out cheaper. Is this right? Also, what sort of tyre would you recommend?

I've no idea about the intake breather hose, except that the man at the garage said it's quite expensive to fix.

So, how should I proceed? Any advice very much appreciated. Thanks.

It's a 60 plate, so late 2010. 91k.

diesel or petrol? what engine size?

fuel filters are especially important for diesel cars, more than for petrol cars. Not expensive to replace at all though.

Same for the intake breather hose. Parts should only be 50 pounds max and fitting it should be around 30 minutes work. If your current intake breather hose is damaged I would definitely recommend changing is since unfiltered air can enter the inlet manifold.

The breather hose is basically the hose between the air filter an the throttle body. I can imagine that cracks might actually impact the way that the car is running too.

did you get a quote for the cost to fix those issues? I don't think you have to be worried about expensive repairs tbh.

It's a 1.6 diesel DRIVe - sorry, should have specified that!

He didn't give me quotes for the work. He seemed a bit evasive about the whole thing and didn't really explain what he'd found.

volvopilot - thanks so much for clarifying for me. Any idea what sort of quote is reasonable for those two things? I'm not sure whether to go back to the garage that did the service or look elsewhere.

Also, what is the best way of buying tyres, and what tyres are recommended? I need two new front ones very soon.

Thanks again.

£350 seems quite pricy given no fuel filter change and no DPF top up etc.

Don't know where you are and what you had done but I think there is a good chance you would have paid less at a main dealer.

So , it is a 2011 model year with 91000 miles . You have to assume the servicing has not been carried out properly , The fact that you have a fault for the additive tank being low proves that , it should have been filled at the 37500 and 75000 mile major services , so that will need doing , it needed the counters resetting at the same time so only a volvo dealer or authorised workshop can do that .
The next major service is at 100,000 miles so I would get that done which includes the additive and reset ,fuel filter and air filter and pollen filter as well as the oil and filter change . .. the next service is a small one at 102500 miles.
I would get it done at the dealer so that they can check it over on their free health check, this should clarify what else is wrong with the car by someone who knows .also you get free software updates which I guess it has not had for a long time . .
£350 is far from cheap for the small service you had in fact the dealer price for the major service isn't too far from that , the dealer should have been able to beat that price for the previous small service !

Not sure about that. It's only had one previous owner and it came with a full Volvo dealer service history. I've got invoices for all its past services - money clearly wasn't an issue for the person who owned it before me. But who knows.

I asked the garage (which is a Volvo specialist) for a small service. However, they replaced the oil, air and pollen filters. Is that not usual for a small service?

I'm almost certain the first service it had with me (also at a Volvo specialist garage) did a software update.

yes that is the normal small service . If they are an independent workshop then they should be able to do all you need ….. at a stiff price .. and the additive tank should have been topped up at the 75000 mile service , they easily last 36000 miles ...

Sorry, missed this. My last service was £250 and that included things like new windscreen wipers. I really was open-mouthed at the £350 figure. I'm in the south east. Very few Volvo specialists near me.
