I have tried stetoscope. My engine does not sounds fine - I have seen few D5 engines, not even 1 sounded similar to mine.
I am planning to do job myself, so wont be as bad. You don't have to use VOVLO lifters, there are many aftermarket ones. New fuel lines are advised, but not a must. As I said before I have tried new oil with flush, diesel and lifter additive - no change.
I will write more info here, when I finally get around and change them.

Changed hydraulic lifters, 4 of them were no good - stuck solid/broken.
All good now - no more rattling/ticking noises from engine - all quiet.
Used new set of FAI lifters, VOLVO rocker cover gasket, BOSCH injector washers, VOLVO injector clamp bolts, new camshaft seal, Reinz sealant.

Good that its solved , if you had changed it and the sound was still there it was somewhat expensive.
I should have sweared it was an injector according to its soundings
Lifters are weak on this engine but most of the time its the tugboat sound

How loud it actually gets and when should i start worrie about it. Its ticking cold and warm but i can't hear it when the hood is closed. Is it actually getting so loud that you could hear it when sitting in the car? Ive been told that little ticking sound is normal for these engines

It's not a bad job overall well once the injectors are out ( there's always one ) which caused more hardship than the job itself.
With injectors out it took approx 4 hours of labour I just took the timing belt off the camshaft pulley and used tippex, fan belt stayed in place, new inlet gasket and now it's like a Swiss watch as opposed to a Nuffield with everyone turning to look for all the wrong reasons 👍
