Dave.
my thoughts too, refilled at weekend, mpg went from 25.45 with pirelli's to 24.18 with the grabbers. not sure if the drop in temperatures has had much of an effect. but working on this difference, over the life of a tyre est 20k miles, then it costs an extra £50 total to run these over the pirellis over 20k miles, but i've saved £100 per tyre though, but hopefully they'll last twice as long to my last set of pirellis......

overall, happy and as long as they well in the winter i get the same next time.

I wonder if this thread should become a "Sticky"?

Questions relating to tyres seem to come up frequently, especially with the snow falling, and this thread seems to contain the most information about the different choices of tyre, and the importance of getting the drive-train geometry set up properly.

Anyone else agree?

I think the cold weather does have an impact. I have not changed my tyres and was amazed to see the average MPG plummeting the other day while crusing at 80mph... my guess is that DPF regeneration is using much more fuel in freezing temperature... just a guess but MPG clearly down anyway. I can only assume it is due to temperature.

Smile Winter Tyres ...

After almost sliding off a mountin (v.scary) in the french alps we put on Winter tyres last year (Nokian's), the change for when driving in bad conditions almost unbelievable, grip, breaking everything miles better, as if Ice and Snow wasn't on the road.

We've left these on all year and found no issues MPG etc all stayed same. So in recent weather we've been driving around with no problems whilst other 4x4's slide around. So I can't see any draw back to winter tyres, though about getting a different set of wheels to swap between winter and summer tyres but doesn't seem worthwhile...

Yes. I've been saying this for some years now.

Also you have the advantage of better off road performance for the rest of the year as well. (The reason I got mine originally.)

Just to try and clarify things then,

I'm about to get a set of General Grabbers, weather not too bad in South Wales, but will be going north after Christmas.

I have no intention, or budget, to buy a second set of wheels just to run winter tyres, so that's one reason why I think the GGs are the right ones for me. As I understand, these are "All Weather" tyres rather than "Winter", so how do they compare in the bad weather.

Any other thoughts before I take the plunge?

Cheers.

Bobdabuilda,

Very lucky, just sourced 4 Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme's for £121 + VAT + £2.50 delivery each. Not far off Camskill prices - although they have no stock.

Now need to get my local dealer to fit & do 4 wheel laser alignment.

Regards Buck

Buck I thought that you had sourced 8 Nokians tyres?
It will be at least another 3 weeks before i can get the Goodridge ATs as there is none in the country to replace the Bridgestone Dueler H/T. Its just as well im not desperate but the Bridgstones are not the best imo.
The V40 needs 225x40x17 winter tyres also but they are getting scarce .
