... Snap!
Afternoon all
I took yesterday (Friday) of work to do some fiddling around with my 855 TDI, include changing oil etc and book it in for a cambelt change (I decided not to replace it myself). Unfortunately, on Thursday evening as I approached a roundabout, the cambelt snapped and pretty much every light on the dashboard lit up before we rolled to a halt. Much as i hate to admit it I think that it is terminal for the car, which was just approaching 270,000 miles. However, before I start pulling bits off it I thought I'd see if there are any sensible checks that should be made to confirm that it hasn't been lucky and avoided anything too major? I've taken off the cambelt cover and the top cam gear slides backwards and forwards (good/bad sign?). The cam gear doesn't want to turn very far but I've not forced it. Thanks in advance for any help Kind regards Bill

I cant be too sure as im still learning about Volvo's. Although in general i think it's pretty bad for any diesel engine. On the old Lynx Ford Diesel engine they were known to shatter the cams.

Probably the camshaft has broken in two or three and you will have bent valves. That's the usual result. Sorry.

How long ago was the belt replaced...
This is where I have to admit that it was overdue a change! From the records I have, it was about 95k ago as the second change was late. It's fair to say that I've already kicked myself! On the bright side, it does mean that I can start exploring the engine and removing bits without fear of them not going back properly. Also, it may end up providing a donor injection pump for my 'new car', but that's my other thread! Thanks for the replies Bill

don't be too quick to decide that its terminal. our V70 suffered the same fate as the result of a failed water pump but was lucky enough to only have one valve damaged and the cam shaft intact. at least take the rocker cover off and have a look inside. if the cam shaft is snapped then yes its probably terminal, but the valves are only about £10 each so if there aren't too many damaged then you should find that repairs aren't too bad. all depends what the car's worth to you though really. if you decide that it is terminal, is there any chance of me being cheeky and asking if you'd sell me the no.4 injector (the one with the wire attached)?
Hope i have been of some help. Richard |
