Default GUIDE: Replacing Cam Seals / Crank Seal / VVT Hub

Completed successfully last weekend. I hope this guide can be of help to some of you out there. This work was completed on a 2003 V40 1.9T engine B4204T4. Title is slightly misleading. This guide covers front and rear cam seals and ONLY the front crank seal.

Note that replacing front cam seals and front crank seal require following most instructions in this guide. If you are replacing the rear cam seal only most of this IS NOT required. Instead it's a 15min job: pop off the camshaft position sensor and replace seal. The details around this step are covered in the instructions.

Lastly I neglected to mention in the guide that I used the screw provided in the cam locking toolset to press in the rear cam seal in, in conjunction with the socket/drift.

Other jobs that you may want to consider doing while the stuff is accessible:

- The infamous rusted bottom radiator hose jubilee clip
- VVT gear replacement
- Timing belt, tensioner and idler replacement
- Serpentine belt and tensioner replacement
- Water pump replacement
- Oil pump replacement
- Camshaft position sensor replacement
- Starter replacement

Default Guide: Replacing f/r cam seals, front crank seal & VVT hub

For lack of a more elegant way of editing the title, I've thrown in a reply with an updated title so assist for future searches. I did not explicitely instruct on the replacement of the VVT in the guide but I did take the old one off and put it back on. Replacing is just as easy. Figured it belonged in the title given the problems associated with the VVT.

I’m guessing that the collection of PDF's is to stay within the attachment file size limit? If you want if you email me the full PDF I have some web space I can happily host it on for you and link it here? It would save people downloading all the files and save trying to use one of the file sharing sites...

It would be good if it was hosted somewhere as if the forums have another server move they won't be lost like all the pictures last year were

I'm ok with that. David - let me know where to send the 11MB file. Also - does anyone know if I can change the title of the post? I realized afterwards that I should probably specifically mention "VVT Hub replacement" in the title given that it has to come off as part of this guide and that it is a common issue with our V40's.

Hey, this should work OK - let me know if it doesn't!

http://dmiller.sofi.org.uk/volvo/cam...rank_seals.pdf

All I did was download the separate files and stuck them together.

pierremcalpine - If this isn't right then if you can email me the correct PDF through my email address I sent on the PM I will update it.

If anyone else wants things hosted (fully legal - no copies of VIDA!) just drop me a PM.

Right I'm off to sort the baby but will be back on line later to check for any issues.

Cheers,

David.

Perfect, David. This is great. Maybe I should just put a new post up, with a proper title (including VVT hub) and attach a link to the revised file...also, if I send you an updated Word file can you convert to PDF for me? I asked my sister last time and I would prefer to not have her groaning at me again...
Cheers,

Brilliant guide with a lot of detail.

To change the title, contact the mods here to do it for you. Just click on the "report post" triangle icon at the bottom left of your first post and ask them what changes you want them to do.

PS. I love the knuckle protectors... lol
