I know a good place where to host a full sized PDF! It's the same one I use for all the images that I post on here. It will be as a backup for a backup. Could somebody send me that pdf please?

Note to any prospective users of the guide - please use the link provided by dmiller as it provides the latest version of the guide itself. The multiple PDF links a the front end of the post are outdated and should probably be removed. Thanks to DWM for tips on how to build a crank counterhold and associated pics!

Here's what I ended up using as a counterhold. Not as easy as I thought but very do-able. The challenge is to manage the recessed harmonic balancer screw holes. You cannot simply tighten two pieces off metal up against it. In my case I bought a bunch of 5/16 washers and put them behind the two screws to raise the counterhold suffiently. Also, you'll need to buy 2 M8 screws which for me were twice as long as the HB bolts. Lastly I ended up having to grind the edges off the ends of the metal pieces to ensure there was still room for the 30mm socket in the centre. In the end, I did all this only to find out that I had already sufficiently tightened the centre bolt!!!

One week later
Well I had a grand total of one week of v40 enjoyment before another problem appeared. Well I can't really confirm that it's "different" problem. I drove about 500km this week trouble-free then started the car this morning and it stuttered a bit on start-up. Then the &$-/@ CEL came on with code P0015. Exhaust camshaft position timing over retarded bank 1. Nice message.
So... My first thought was that I re-installed the timing belt wrong and that maybe I'm off by a tooth on the exhaust side...but why now and not 500km ago when I first restarted the vehicle? My second thought was maybe a stretched belt as I re-used mine as it only had 50,000 miles on it. My third thought was maybe a bad vvt because a) there appears to be a film of oil sprayed on the inside of the timing belt cover on the exhaust end (even though i cleaned it before putting it back on last week) and b) it's the original vvt. I guess that I'm going to be diving back in to the engine bay some time soon. Any suggestions on what makes most sense? I also unplugged the battery this afternoon and connected the battery leads together hoping to clear out the code but it came right back on the minute the car was started. Which again made me think that if it was indeed a bad belt install that I would have seen this come up right away...no? Will a Volvo diagnostics tool give me more info than what I've already got?

Timing Belt Tensioner Tip
Quick follow-up:
I did not replace the VVT when I completed the work described in the guide but a modest amount of oil spray on the underside of the timing cover lead me to believe that I might have to in the future. Well, when I got the CEL, I decided that if I was going to go at this job again that I might as well throw a new VVT on (as well as a new belt/tensioner/idler for good measure). I believe that I figured out what I did wrong the first time to get the CEL (P0015). When tightening the tensioner the VIDA instructions specifically say to make sure that the belt is tight between the intake cam and the crankshaft. I thought it was but what I didnt realize is that you can actually turn the crank clock-wise slightly at this time to tighten up the belt. One you've done this and once you've tensioned the tensioner you then turn the crank counterclockwise until it stops against the locking pin once more. Then you can tighten up the VVT gear and non-VVT gear knowing that tension is equally distributed across the whole mess. All done (again) and cars runs great. Interestingly, a new VVT doesn't come with a timing gear mark because it doesnt really matter how you put it on. However, it does mean that you'll need to manually mark it when the time comes to replace the belt.

VVT on a V70
Hi guys, I am sorry if this is in the wrong section but I have looked long and hard for answers to this question but can not find anything related to V70 VVT. My VVT is pictured hopefully in the attachments, and I'd really like to know, at what point do I slacken the three 10mm bolts that hold it to the cam gear. I know obviously, if I'm replacing it or removing it then they will be loose or off, so I put the VVT back on the cam gear finger tight. Then bolt the 55 torq bolt up with the timing marks aligned. Then fit the belt, torq up the 55 torq bolt to 88lbs ft and then tighten the three 10mm bolts????? If so, what should my starting position be for the VVT in relation to the cam gear??? Fully to the left? Fully to the right? The bolt slots are elongated to allow for adjustment but can not find any info on the correct procedure for adjusting it. If anyone out there knows, I would be incredibly grateful. My V70 is a 2001 model, 2.4 petrol automatic and it's a UK model.
