Default Soot Filter Full - but no soot filter..

Been in and out of the garage with this one - started about a year ago with "Soot Filter Full" messages. Tried various injector and DPF cleaner additives without any luck and put it into the garage.

Got a phone call to say the car didn't have a DPF and they couldn't understand why the message was coming up (its a '55 plate S60 163bhp with around 115K on the clock)

They changed out the EGR valve and cleaned the pipes + fitted a new Mass airflow sensor, but a few weeks later, the message came back and now it's gone into limp mode today.

Any ideas as to what else it could be?

What colour is your engine cover?

It could be possible that your car has had the dpf removed but not had the software delete. This of course is now an mot failure but people used to do this to avoid dpf related problems.

What badge is on the tailgate - D5 or 2.4 ?
If the latter it may have had the DPF removed but the car still thinks there is one there.

It's got a black engine cover.

& Neither - it just says S60 on the left hand side.

I think it's an earlier engine - it doesnt have the swirl arm things I've seen mentioned in the forum.

Also, I got it off my father-in-law when he gave up driving and he had it from new and only ever had it serviced at the main dealer.

If the car thinks it has a DPF, then it sounds to me that its got the wrong software loaded onto it. It may need a trip to a Volvo dealer.

I've had it for 3 years and took it for servicing to an independent volvo specialist - is it possible they've overwritten the software at one of the services (seems unlikely though doesn't it?)

It is certainly strange! You have a euro 3 engine so it's right they can't find one as it never had it. Normally software updates are done when it gets serviced at s dealer and earlier cars ecms and euro 4 later ecms are completely different so I wouldn't of thought it was possible to load the wrong software

So, a soot filter full message for a non existent filter made them change the egr and the maf.
They may have suspected something else, they would hardly do that otherwise.
Has the DIM been replaced by any chance ? Just wondering if messages are pre-stored on the DIM and if a later unit was fitted............ a message that should say A says B instead?

I'll need to take it back - they did find other codes pointing to the MAF and the EGR - all I get on the dashboard was the soot filter warning though.

Brendan, what's a DIM?
