Default Volvo for life? Not any more

So it is time to bid you all a farewell and say a big thankyou.

My S70 was the best car I have ever owned and my biggest mistake was to think the S60 was half the car the S70 was.

Whilst the S60 was reliable and had a great engine it just did not feel any better screwed together than anything the koreans are currently kicking out.

I was paying for a premium product at service time and purchace time and got treated like a mug by my dealer and Volvo UK.

So now it is time to buy a new car and guess what. It isn't a Volvo.

So thankyou everybody on here once again for help and advice and best wishes for the future.

Before you go and leave the fold tell us what has turned your head and persuaded you to part with your hard earned cash. Please.....

This may sound daft, but why don't you save your pennies and buy a mint secondhand S70?

Well the whole servicing rip off is not just with Volvo to be fair and there are BMW and Mercedes owners in my office dowing the same thing at the moment.

So what did I buy.

A Ford Mondeo. It has everything my S60 had, more room in the back and a better warranty with half the servicing costs.

I was tempted even to go for the estate which is actually bigger than the V70 but in the end opted for a 4 door.

And if in 12 months time, it has not aged well then at this sort of money (I am not buying brand new here) I can afford to buy another with the money I have saved over buying another Volvo (or BMW or Mercedes or Audi etc)

This is not as daft as it sounds and did actually cross my mind however there are very few TDi versions out there that have not got intergalactic miles and as I do 30,000 miles a year I thought this might not be a wise move but yes i did look into it

Alternatively buy yourself a decent 240/740/940 for £1000-2000 miles, run it for 12 months and if it lets you down buy another one.

You could repair and run it for £1000 a year - and should do 30000miles. My 740 (now departed) was bought 2 year ago, at 17 years old, she did 17000 miles in the first year (including 2000 miles of heavy towing) without problem.

Even the naff fuel economy is offset by the minimal capial outlay.

With the money saved on a workhorse you can buy yourself a toy for weekend use!!!

The depreciation on a korean car is going to be terrible! I know what you mean about the dealers though. I got the impression I was the only person not in on the joke last time I went.

Ah well, you win some, you lose some!

The Mondeo is a very nice car though, watch out for depreciation I drove a TDCi Mk3 when they first came out - quite nice, but the seats felt like a wooden bench in comparison to the Volvo's. The stereo quality was terrible, also.

That, and it had LESS power than my D5 and returned worse economy!
