well does the soda dissolve solid soot in a pipe , 3mm dia x say 2 inches around a 90 degree bend ?? worth a try ! but so rare that it is unlikely to happen to you .

Thank you Clan. I've had a quick look at it and I can see it won't be easy.

I have access to some chemicals at work, and also compressed air. I'll give it a go. If it works great, if not we also have metal recycling bins so nothing to lose really.

Yes the caustic solution will progressively dissolve and remove the soot, meaning that the solution/soot interface will slowly move along the pipe until all soot is dissolved... might take a day or two though, depending how far the blockage had actually built up (would it really extend to 2" up the pipe, given that there is zero flow?). Heating the solution would speed up the reaction, as would vibration/stirring/agitation.

It was quite a common thing to have to do to 2-stroke motorcycle exhaust pipes when they became blocked with soot.

Looking forward to your findings. You could then sell it on an exchange basis to a fellow forum member!

there are a lot of pressure pulses in the exhaust manifold of course so the soot could be some distance up the pipe . the 3mm bore of the pipe would damp out the pulsations to get a steady reading ... let us know how the cleaning goes ...

Well it seems the car is not sorted and we had the bad smell inside the car again. Pulled bonnet and found smoke from engine. Phoned dealer but unable to help. Out of warranty. We have continued on holiday and made it but I'm not impressed. We stopped off at another dealers just off the motorway who took a quick look at it for me. Within seconds he found the problem, said he couldn't understand how my local dealer had missed this, as it originally went in due to a smell of burning oil. We are now on holiday with a car we are reluctant to use.

Seems my rocker box cover gasket has gone. Hoping it will last anothr week.

That's odd. Suggests that the cam cover may have been removed at some point?

About a month ago I noticed an oily smell in the car when the engine was hot and I was stationary. This was reported to the dealer when I contacted them about the recall. That's why they had my car straight in. They did the work for the recall but missed the gasket leaking. Again when they carried out the emap pipe replacement they missed the gasket leaking even though it's right next to it. There are parts around the back of the engine by the emap pipe that are damp and oily to touch. It seems like they are only able to find a problem if it puts a warning code up.

The oily smell when hot was reported to the dealer from the start. I'm now on holiday £250 lighter and a car that has not been fixed and we now don't want to use because the leak will only get worse, not better.

Sorry for my ignorance but I am looking at buying xc60.
Is the issue only effecting the 2.0 or is the 2.4 also effected?

Thanks in advance
