They're handy those codless impact drivers Mark! It's obviously well used from the look of it!

I've got a couple of these :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0036YHBMM

Had to buy the second after lending the first to someone who stupidly wired the fag lighter in their car the wrong way round! Fried it instantly! Converted it to simple go/no-go operation now so is useful for undoing/doing things up without the torque control.
The other still has the torque control and is very useful!

Default Griston64. Those bolts.

The bolts securing the front brake back plates on my 1992 940 are roundhead with hex socket. I damaged mine whilst removing them. Fortunately there is an excellent specialist fastener supplier local to me. Took one to them and they were able to provide replacements from stock.

Managed to remove the nearside hub nut by the brakes on and long breaker bar method. The offside one was extremely difficult, breaker bar and scaffolding pole and sledge hammer.

Have a look at this part number and the location Mark, it IS a hex socket (cap head/Allen hole) screw :

https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/p...6/1273210.html

Item #13 on the pretty picture but i would say it wouldn't be hard to find some stainless versions on fleaby for a sensible price. Just need the thread diameter and length and you know what sort of head it is.

It's the No 3 bolt the I had trouble with Dave. It holds the splash guard in place.

I have found a supplier online they are M8 X 14. They even supply thread lock ones in stainless

I'm glad you got those nuts undone.

re 1/2 drive with or without scaffolding, on the evidence posted re fear of snapping, that is a possible route to A&E. No thanks. It reminds me vividly of a safety poster at Barts A&E. I have a 3/4 drive two metre long breaker bar. Reasonably priced on eBay a few years ago. And a few carefully chosen 3/4 drive sockets. I have been called risk averse and I'm very happy to stay that way.

Re impact drivers that 12v tool, apparently perhaps lacking reverse polarity protection, looks useful for a careful user in range of a 12v supply. My local trade tool supplier found me a trade quality impact driver at what they call a Reasonably Economical price. Actually I get good tools at modest prices there. I got it due to increasing personal fragility. It is reserved in my care for undoing. It "saved my bacon" recently on a bolt that must have been tightened by gorillas. (Hmmm. I could not find my 2 metre breaker bar....)

CAUTION!!!

Neverever use stainless screws on brake mounting.
Never ever.
especially stainless from the bay, and others not too!!!!!

They are not made for this kind of force.
Don't swap any screw on the suspension to stainless.

doesn't matter V2A or V4A

they are strictly forbitten on cars at the brakes and the suspension, for good reason.

DON'T DO IT

good luck, and swap back if you did this in the past, Kay

number 3 will be ok in stainless, this screw has nothing to fight with

Removed the other hub nut today and took off hub. Funny but the bottom of this strut was more rusty and yet the hub slid off much easier. It seemed quite oily as well

Started the clean up process with the old wire brush. At least the abs sensors were nice and easy to get out
