Also the VED is lower on the later models compared to the likes of my 07 plate 185 which is in the mid £500's

That's a good point - I'm not personally sure of the milestones but I have it in my head that since the higher rates were introduced in March 2006, the auto versions of the XC90 dipped in and out of the top end a few times over the proceeding years.

I am not too bothered as the 163 bhp one i had a few years ago was manageable on mpg any info or buying advice on the later models is very much appreciated
fuel consumption is nothing to do with volvo it is done by the government to the same standards and is only valid for comparing one make/ model of car against another . Manufacturers are not allowed to quote fuel consumption figures of their own .

True, but indirectly the manufacturers always have to compete and will continue to strive for lower consumption and better emissions to meet regulatory requirements and to be "one-up" on their competitors

If Brand A reports 34 mpg one year, then Brand B will strive to get 34.more for a similar engine/body/vehicle/power for the next year

Ya gotta love competition

Not too concerned with economy i was just saying it seems the later variants are more efficient what does concern me is if they are more or less reliable as the earlier ones

indeed , the less emissions the more efficient the engine is and less fuel it would use of coursd.

They may be smart enough to tune the engine so as to do better at the government mpg specific drive test. That might explain the usual worse figures in real life

We are discussing Volvos not Volkswagens...

Just joking - but it's what happened

Good choice. The '05 163hp is at a sweet spot in my opinion.
