Stop the dilemma immediately by sticking to the manufacturer's recommended sizes.

There's got to be more to do in life then debate what will happen to your car when you fit bigger wheels and tyres....

Alright, lets turn this thread around: how about smaller wheels?
A slammed XC90?
Stanced?
Will you get away with 14" low profile?

Well, apparently the 275/40 on 20" rims are a legitimate 'one step up' option or whatever the term is according to Volvo. However I may just go for the 255/45 others have mentioned as being the standard when I hve to re-shoe the car.
As I said, the 275/40s were on the car when I got it, and I was concerned that everyone on here was using 255/45.

What are the advantages/disadvantages between the two sizes?

I like the look of the 20" wheels, but find the ride a little harsh on anything other than good roads.

I'm using Vredestein Quadrac 5 all seasons. I would have liked to try the Michelin Cross Climate but they don't seem to make them in either size.

Just checked my wheels and they are 19" Ixion alloys on 50 x 255 which I guess is why the ride is very good except for the harshest roads.
