Default What the Heck is Vegan Leather

Is anybody else on here participating in the Volvo drivers survey scheme ?

Just had a survey asking me how I'd think about Vegan leather in a future Volvo. Eh What the heck is Vegan Leather - isn't that plastic or Vinyl ?

Had to think hard on how to answer is diplomatically

Aren't the terms 'Vegan' and 'Leather' mutually exclusive, 'AndyJudge'? My dictionary defines 'Vegan' as "using or containing no animal products", ergo you can't have vegan leather - it has to be a contradiction in terms, surely?

Regards, John.

I'm not sure how I would feel about sitting on the skin of a vegan. Taking organ donation a bit far I think.

It is the latest in synthetic leatherette.

Mercedes (Artico), Lexus (Tahara) and Tesla ("Vegan Leather") all use it extensively.

Leather is a perceived sign of luxury whilst vegan is very quickly straying from being anything to do with its ethical origins.

It sounds to me like a contrived marketing BS way to say "not leather", instead using vegan as some sort of cushion to soften the blow of a reduction in perceived quality.

If Volvo or any manufacturer were truly concerned with animal welfare, they would end the use of leather without notice or consultation rather than taking a straw poll to see if their sales will be impacted.
If enough people object, the removal of leather won't happen.
Not exactly ethical credentials.

Default Prefer fabric.

Having owned cars in the past with leatherette seats I prefer fabric as one’s skin doesn’t stick to it. ( in my younger days when wearing shorts in the warmer weather, not pleasant.)

I remember that stuff, it was horrific to sit on and had what seemed the temperature of a furnace when the sun even shown weakly as it is apt to do in the UK.

Even volvos real leather seats are only real leather on the faces, all the rest are vinal/ fake leather.

Cloth seats for me.
It cost volvo a car when I was told by 2 dealers I could not down spec leather to cloth despite being able to up spec from cloth to leather. At the the time the spec came to a shade over 33k and I could not have the seats I wanted. I walked and baught second hand with cloth seats saving 20k.

As for vegan leather, a case of miss representation of goods, if it's leather it cannot be vegan and if it's vegan it cannot be leather.
