Default XC90 vs XC90 R Design

I am changing my 2007 V70 for a similar year XC90. However, I am unsure which XC90 to go for. I really like the added extras with the R Design but not sure on the added costs attached (services, repairs, MPG etc)

Can anyone advise on which would be overall better option.

I defo need 7 seats, tow a caravan for weekends away and holidays and need a good sized boot.

Thankyou in advance :-)

The R-Design is primarily optical design changes t make it look sporty.

The only mechanical changes it has are a stiffened chassis setup (sport chassis / suspension) and a different speed dependent steering setup, 20" wheels, as well as quad exhaust tips on the diesel.
Engine and gearbox and other stuff is identical.
Note that the quad exhaust tips mean no spare wheel can be fitted, so the R-Design comes with the little air pump and emergency leak stopper goop.

The optical changes are:
Different seat styles and colours (with white piping)
Different floor mats
Front bumper design slightly different
Side skirts
Dash has blue instrument gauges
Mirror covers silver

A lot of R-Designs (such as mine) have higher spec options fitted. I have telephone, nav, rear parking camera, rear seat entertainment, bendy headlamps, a removable towbar. But all this stuff can appear on non-R-Designs as well.

Many of the R-Design influences were incorporated into the later model XC90s, so the 2014, 2015 model years look almost like R-Design, but lacking the badging

Thankyou swiss

If the engine is identical then repair costs and fuel consumption should not be any different to a standard XC90. The only different in costs will be tyres and replacement of trims etc?

Tyre cost will be similar to non-R-Design as any XC90 can have 20 inch rims if you want.
And do 20" tyres cost more or less than 19" or 17" ?? Depends on the brand.
I have 20" and 17" wheels for my XC90: 20" for Summer, 17" for Winter.
What drives the tyre price is the maximum speed of the vehicle and your local country regulations. Here in Switzerland I MUST have tyres rated for maximum load at maximum speed of the vehicle. Because I could theoretically load it to the max and drive at max speed. So I have expensive Pirellis fitted. But other countries have different rules, and you can fit cheaper tyres.

As for Trim Replacement: the costs are identical to non R-Design.
It's just that the trim pieces like Seats are different on the R-Design

And if you are factoring replacing trim in your running cost calculations, then I would question how accurately your calculation basis reflects reality....

I have replaced one missing small plastic trim piece on my R-Design, cost me something like 3 GBP. Trivial. And identical costs to non-R-Design, as that part of the trim was identical.
But normally Trim does not "fail" and is thus not a maintenance item.

I guess I was just trying to pick out the differences.

I think I'm either going to go for a XC90 executive or a XC90 r design.

Both come with lots of extras that I am looking to have

I have a 2013 R-Design and my initial intrepidation for the harder suspension and low profile tyres was soon dispersed as ride on majority of roads is sublime and the handling is impressive for a large SUV; I love the R-Design design cues especially the blue dials - so much nicer to look at instead of a dull black!

The twin rear exhausts are a little OTT and prevent having the spare wheel - if the exhaust ever rots out on mine I may replace with standard pipes. FYI - I have spotted an earlier R-Design with standard exhaust so if you are going for slightly older you may get the best of both worlds.

As Swiss says, there are lots variations between the models hence my surprise at seeing an R-Design with the standard exhaust set up.

That's good to know.

Is there anything I should be aware off? Look out for?

Good maintenance history is vital

Check what wheels are fitted.... decent tyres on 20” rims can cost twice that as 18” rims like for like and generally don’t last as long...

40k plus is possible from a set of 18’s... I may be corrected but I don’t hear anyone with 20’s getting that?

Mine is running Pirelli verde on 19" alloys - had the rears replaced 2 years ago now done 33K and should get close to 40k before I need to change them so very happy. The fronts replaced around 6 months ago so will be a year or so before I know what I can get from them.
