Swishtony I would absolutely say you have an issue for those sorts of figures on that sort of journey

My D5 AWD would beat that easily - I've noticed on a light throttle its actually very frugal for a near two ton car with AWD. Its purely when (often!) pushed it drops

.....and so would I.

Driving my D5 with no care for economy I get 27mpg round town and 34mpg on a run, although can get more if I try, which I don't because it is stressful!!

Swishy, I don't have an XC60 but I do have a Geartronic D4 and after getting a call about a family drama have just blasted from Doncaster to Glasgow with the mother of all headwinds, a hilly and exposed A66, and rarely under 90 on the motorway (and to hell with any comments about speeding). According to my VOC app I got 46.3mpg for the run - so given your description of your conditions I would definitely say something is up....

Thankfully got here 20 minutes before the drama became a crisis in case anyone thinks I'm somewhat missing my priorities being on a forum instead of dealing with domestics!

Default Does diesel matter?

Hi all

Thanks for this really helpful thread. I'm about to buy my first Volvo (S60 D4 manual) so it's great to get a real handle for what to expect.

One thing I'm interested in is whether anyone has a feeling for whether it matters _where_ you buy your fuel? I've only noticed one comment which said Shell VPower diesel. Any opinions on whether that affects mpg?

I currently have a 2.2TDCi Mondeo (163) and get 42-44mpg. I used to use Shell standard as it was my nearest station but now use Esso coz I moved house. No obvious difference in performance or economy. My old 2.5V6 petrol Mondeo delivered 4-5mpg better economy on the old Shell Optimax but did worse on VPower than standard.

Is diesel just diesel?

Shell V power gives more power or mpg and the engine runs smoother from my experience.

Not sure if this has been mentioned in earlier posts, but diesels become more fuel-efficient as the mileage increases. I ran a Passat 1.9 TDi from new, 1997-2009, finally doing a scrappage deal (at 196,000) for a V50 DrivE. The V50 is currently up at 128,000. I am an obsessive 'brimmer' and record exact mpg. I have always used premium diesel in the V50 (usual Shell V-Power). I rarely achieve as good a consumption with the V50 as I did with the Passat, which (particularly as it crossed into 'six figures') would achieve 60mpg+ with ease. The V50 I would say is 2-3 mpg worse. It's difficult to make an exact comparison, but I have enough data to be comfortable with this assertion. I've always found this strange. Older TDi technology, heavier body, larger engine, but better mpg. Have DPFs and other technology to reduce CO2 actually adversely affected fuel consumption ? Certainly summer consumption is better than winter as a previous post observed. As for the 'official consumption' data, it is, quite simply, fraudulent. It would be great to see a genuine video of a car delivering the 'official consumption' in the official test to see exactly how it is done.

Yes they certainly have. The Euro 3 non DPF D5 XC90 is still better than the 2014 XC90 D5. Be interesting to see how it compares with the new XC90 D5 when delivery starts in May.

Shell V + contains more energy than standard diesel so you probably had it diluted with diesel still in the tank if you only had one fill up.

My son in law switched to V + for his motorbike and got an extra 11 mph from it. (139 mph) Runs more smoothly too, Just like my D5 does.

Err, no. It is a standard lab test set by the Government that all car manufactures are required to subject their cars to. Nothing fraudulent. Just a level playing field. Little relationship to real world conditions and just for comparison though.
