Default D4, D5, Egr, chocolate gearboxes...... etc

Hey Guys.

I have just sold a 2005 S60 d5 and would like to replace it with either a V60 or XC60, about 2010- 2013, automatic and about 70-100,000 miles.

I have done a fair bit of reading on here and elsewhere. I can see that the 2.0d VEA engine is a dog and best avoided.

Also note that the aisin Warner auto box can be a bit flaky at about 120000.

I have got to the point where I am a bit confused as to which way to turn.

Questions,

- Given the D4 problems, I guess I will be looking solely at D5, are there any major reliability differences between the 205 and 215 bhp versions. I am aware that it has a load of environmental gubbins that my euro 3 D5 did not, but is it still a good reliable motor?.

Regarding the gearbox, are they all crap, or is there a date before or after which they become better or worse.. does it make no difference if they are 2wd or 4wd, is it still the same gearbox.

Any other major issues I should be thinking about.

So I guess in summary I am wondering if there is a particular model/age that sudesteps some issues. Same principle as my 2005 having the cosmetic facelift, but avoiding the dpf issues that came with the later euro 4.

I think whatever I go for i will get a comprehensive Warranty Direct policy, but I still don't want the hassle of repeated egr valve and gearbox part replacement.

Appreciate that this is rather a long first post, so many thanks for reading and hopefully also some good advice.

Cheers

Rob

The Aisin 6sp Auto in itself is a robust box, the issue is the solenoid block. Apparently, the pistons wear and it loses oil pressure requiring adaptations to compensate for it. Horton Motors do a good Idiots guide to the Volvo Autobox. Volvo are churning out cars and there’s loads of happy customers out there who never have a problem, it’s only the people who come to forums looking for info or a good gripe. Not many people go on forums to Just praise their motorS unless it’s the VOC
I’ve got a V60 cross country with AWD, Auto and it’s got the 2.4 D4 lump in it. It’s been a reliable car so far apart from my windscreen which is leaking. Other than that, it’s fine. My Autobox is ok, my only gripe being the “sealed for life” thing and the fact the dealers change the subject every time I mention the subject. I’ve been extending my warranty because of the AWD etc etc, you never know eh?
TBH, clutched are getting expensive to replace these days so an Autobox is worth the risk I reckon.

My VEA from new has been faultless and is worked hard towing. Aisin 8 speed a peach.
On 115k.

The VEA Engine is available in D3, D4 and D5. If you don´t like VEA you should look for the 5 cyl version which is 4wd.
The 8 speed Aisin is pretty problemfree.

You’ve been reading the Daily Mail or Piers Morgan column somewhere. The D4 VEA is fine and comparable to the D5. I’ve owned both.....

The question is do you need AWD or not?

Thanks for the replies guys, it is reassuring that you have had good experiences with Aisin/d4. Also, rest assured I would never rely upon the daily facist, or Piers Morgan for an opinion on anything.

I think that a D4 with 8 speed is rather newer and/or lower mileage than what I am looking to buy....?.

I have read enough stories on hear, on pistonheads, on honest John and elsewhere, regarding earlier 180 hp 2.0 d4 vehicles experiencing multiple egr valve failures that I want to steer well clear of that particular engine.

I don't particularly need or want 4wd, but would only avoid it if there is a reason, other than the mpg hit.

The question remains, if it is taken as a given that I am looking for a 70-100000 miles, d5 engined, 2010-2013 auto box v60 or xc60 is there a particular model that is better, or more robust.

Thanks chaps

Im selling my V60 D5 2014 Se Lux Nav shortly, pending a new job. It has been a great car, apart from a few niggles which is due to me being a picky engineer.

The engine returns 43mpg and the Auto box is perfectly matched. I also have the polestar upgrade and recently flushed the GB oil. The adaptive cruise control is a must for motorway miles.

Common issues to look for when purchasing at the mileage you've stated.

* Radiator leaks at the lower offside corner.
* Excessively worn rear pads and discs.
* Gearboxes that crunch from reverse to drive.

2010-2013 D4 will be the old 5 cylinder, not the VEA.

Hi

I tried to pm you but the 30 post police prevented me!.

Could you PM me and let me know a bit more please, mileage, when you expect to know you are going to sell, what you want for it etc.

I suspect you might want a bit more than my budget, given that it is a 14, but no harm chatting.... if you include an email address I'll be able to reply too!.

Cheers

Rob

This is easily fixed with a software update. I know that may sound implausible that a seemingly mechanical problem can be cured with 1's and 0's but it is... however you run a higher risk of more problems after 20k - 30k miles later.

Hence I would agree that if you are looking at a car and it crunches/jolts when going from P or R to D and vice versa - walk away.
